$96 for a Cree CXB3590???:cry:someone is stitching you up bud. In the last week we have sent COB kits to Vancouver, Ottawa, Banff, Edmonton, no one has had any issues with customs I am aware of?
Cheers

$50USD for a CD CXB3590 is like $80cdn and then shipping/tax and you're closer to $90-$100. Why not just pay $36 for a Vero29 and get basically the same performance while saving a ton of money.

Bonjour
Nobody talk about cob penetration!
Ot is not so big...I would say 16in(@12/14in)@1400mA...no more without lens or reflector!
And I don't know how much more with this or that lens or reflector!???
But I only grew one time with 200w of cxb3590 3500ºk over a 3.5x3.5x4.5 so maybe the lack of penetration came from not enough watt!!??
I wait for a few weeks and I will order more cob to replace my other hps amd we will see if with 90º reflector and more watt I can increase penetration
Cobs come from china or australia so no problems?!?

I totally understand your way of thinking but let me say this. I've been building computers for years and never once have I seen a good quality fan fail. The cob is $36cdn or $24usd so it's not like you even need to be worried. In Canada we can't buy extruded heatsink like Americans can, not that I've seen anyway. Now on another note there is a very solid semi-passive heatsink we can get for fairly cheap and add a fan to it just for extra cooling. It's HERE.

Nice, this is pretty sweet, but would this be a good shape for a slim build, plus a fan on top? Also, will this fit or cover the COB correctly?

I totally know what you mean, considering were kinda neighbors lol maybe we should design a model together. Where abouts do you live in Canada? Ive definitely been looking into the Vero 29's a lot since you mentioned them. Ive been researching the CXB 3590's a ton and the 3070 but your right, the Vero 29's aren't much different from the 3070's or the 3590's in terms of their ability to grow high quality cannabis. The cost alone is a huge difference. So in reality, you can build more lights to provide more protons if its really needed. Im trying to build 4000 Watts of LED Cob power for a 8x16 foot space. I also really want to build a PASSIVE design with no fans. But im still trying to figure out where to buy heatsinks that will allow me to do this. Any suggestions?
I'm in the Okanagan Valley in BC. I'm just building a smaller light for a closet type 2x4 tent, possibly a 4x4.
128sqft of your space x 30-50w's per sq foot = 3800-5000watts. Sounds like about 12 rows of 8 cobs. If you have the money to buy from heatsinkusa then you can get the same passive heatsink everyone else in the forums uses which is about 5.8"x36" with 4 cobs on each.
I wouldn't want to be hooking up 100 cpu coolers!!! The only thing that sucks is you'll pay over $100cdn just for one of your 24 heatsinks. I didn't realize you were doing such a big grow. You might end up getting a discount from Jerry at Kingbrite for an order that big but I highly doubt it will cheaper than ordering Vero 29's from Digikey.ca. I think people are getting CXB3590's for about $45-$50usd per cob. After tax and shipping you'll be paying about $100cdn per cob. Vero's are $36 each from Digikey so the math is easy ;)

Those look bigger than they are. The fan goes on the side of it with clips they include. Many people use those passively on CPU's running at pretty high temps. There are plenty of builds in the forums that use cpu heatsinks exactly like this but different branding/material etc. The cobs are only about 1" square.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Im only going to start out with building what would be the equivalent of 4-1000W HPS bulbs. From what I can tell is thats roughly 550W of COB LED depending on which COB's you go with. So I want to start with roughly 12-200W COB bars.

Can someone explain semi passive to me?

Either your heatsinks are capable of dissipating the heat passively or they are not... adding a fan makes them active. Adding fans to passive setup is kinda silly imo.

I think in this forum/industry, what actually operates is a hybrid version, ie the rooms you build all have fans operating within them and the performance of the pin fins for example implicitly require that for best case performance your room has active air movement

Anyone know of a reputable seller on Alibaba that would ship cobs to canada? There's lots to choose from but the site has so many negative reviews.
