i just got my 8 in valueline. I was able to quiet it fairly ok by using reg ducting and throwing some blanlet. If I was to throw that insulated ducting on it and make a box i am confident it would be far quiter still. Ask yourself is it worth it? The sound. YTou will make it quiet anuf to not alert your naighbors but when inthe room you will hear it. IT is not normal, lol. But quiet enuf for a dedicated grower. Hhehe.
Also I notice that despite the huge airflow, it is tiwce the 6 in I had it is keeping the light almost the same. I wonder if it is just me tonight or the fact I now am venting a 600 and a 400 into the same room when before it was just a 600. IDK, I know with a 6 in you will be ok with a 400 and a 600 to a degree. I live in the desert, I need air soon.
The 6 in has a cardboard box and is pacled with peanuts and cotton. It is whisper quiet. Soon I will build two boxes. It is the only way to fly!

I'm on the hunt for a fan to cool my cool tube. At present I have one of the home depot 6" inline duct fans and its doing nothing for me. I could buy a stanley blower fan (air mover style) from walmart for $50. Its rated CFM on low 1280, medium 1750, high 2180.
Would this work with it bungeed up in my closet and then flow past the bulb and exit up into the attic?

Sounds like for you what you would use it for it would. If you are trying to run it through a carbon filter, I would assume that would be to many CFM's. I think some of the smaller Can-Filters are rated for around 100 CFM.

Thats the inline duct fan that I use now. I didn't think it did much at all. It was not powerful enough. I am using the Stanley Blower now and its saved me tons. I have returned the AC unit and have the fan as my only heat remover.

How much noise do you get with that setup? i would assume that wouldn't work well in a stealth setup?

My set up is a 5x5x8 closet. I can't hear the fan when the door is closed. You could always put the fan in a silencer type box so you can't hear it at all. If you use bigger ducting too it helps cut down any wind noise. I am buying some 6" ducting today so I can better hear the comparison.

Well, I thought i would post an update. I received the sunleaves windtunnel for testing, and I have to say that it moves some serious air. It is the 4 inch model, which does up to 200 CFM. I put it on a speed controller, and I have to say that it might have a slight hum. when it is ran at full power, the air noise is louder than the fan motor.
I might order a T & D to compair the motor when they are contected to a speed controller. This is a cheaper fan, and maybe the direction I should have went in the first place. Mindmelt may have been right.

So I thought I should revisit this thread, and give another update on the Wind Tunnel (http://www.sunleaves.com/detail.asp?sku=SW604). I started this thread because I was looking for the quietest and best fan. I decided to try the Wind Tunnel 4 inch model. The feature that really sold me was the plastic case. I figured the plastic would dampen a lot of sound, and possible vibration. So here is what I think and what i did:
I put the fan on a speed controller so, to test it as if it was connected for use with a carbon filter (http://www.4hydroponics.com/grow_room/speedster.asp). The fan it self is extremely quiet when ran at full speed. It seems to move a ton of air. It is rated at 200CFM. I connected it to flexible exhaust ducting on both ends, about 4 feet on both ends. When it is running at full speed the air exhausted from the ducting is louder than the fan it self. Soon as the fan is ran over a variable speed controller, there is a definite hum from the motor on the fan. The hum does not change in frequency at all when you adjust the speed on the speed controller, it does not seem to be variable with the speed of the fan. The frequency at which the fan hums seems to be louder than the noise from the exhaust for sure, when the speed of the fan is reduced. The fan it self has enough suction to not need to be ran at full speed for my application, but it seems to be quieter if it is ran at full speed, given that the exhaust air is less noticeable than a motor humming. The noise from the exhaust is less noticeable than the frequency at which the fan motor vibrates at when connected to a speed controller.
I hope this is a better description of my observations. I have nothing to compare this to, but I think that I will soon test a fan from http://www.hvacquick.com/spfnconfig.php?fm=td , these fans seem to still be getting the best results.
I would like to get some feedback from other people that use the Speedster for controlling fan speed, do you get a hum from your fan motor?
