Which LED strips would you buy?

Led strips really offer much better light distribution than boards do. The thing is, you need to hang lights higher to get better uniformity. The bigger the maximum open distance between the light points (ie the gap in between the boards, strips or COBs), the higher you need to hang it and therefore the more light you will waste on the walls.

I simply use 4cm tall aluminium U-channels as heat sink. Why would you need to buy an expensive "proper" heat sink? Or do you run them really hard?

You need some air circulation anyway and that cools them even more.

No real good reason , probably overkill to be honest lol

I run them hella soft, don't even need sinks, but if I ever decide to run them hard they would already be built for it?

That's the only bit it logic really lol
Another thing re heatsinks versus u-channel is the whole cleaning thing, you want it to be easy to clean between the fins if you ever get mold. Ive seen more than one here on riu chasing their tail on mold and in the end it was in the frame. Theis also a good reason for not going with square channel.

But man i would love to be able to build with predrilled sinks and all it just gets so expensive when you wanna scale to larger grows.

Sorry if i missed it, but you guys have any thoughts on the nichia optisolis strips sold on cutter? I've been looking at them and think that would be something to try out for my first build. I have a couple cob fixtures from timber that I really like and never had any issues using them, but want to try out a little diy for fun without getting too complicated on a first build. I think the high cri option just kind of adds to the fun of it, bringing something a little different than the 80cri cobs i have.

I appreciate any feedback and thank all of you for your knowledge I've read through already.

They are the creme de la creme of the LED world , i was told just recently by a guy involved in the LED industry, theres Nichia, then theres everyone else . The optisolis are pricey , but i dont think you can go wrong building a light with them.

Hey DL

Im getting some 90cri blux strips for next year, i might take you up on that offer. But ill send some in that case, cant find this spectrum anywhere. What kind of test equipment do you use?
Also congrats on your own branded boards, ive seen them around on pms.
That is a good question, on what he's using to test the strips......

If you have a par meter with good response curve and good power meter it should be fairly easy to do comparative measurements just like cobkit did way back on his cobs.
But it complicates things with 90 cri as most par meters have reduced response to deep red and no response at all at over 700nm where the 90cri is a fair bit stronger than 80cri.

Multimeters, clamp meters, Quantum sensors, lux meters, thermo couples. Spectrometer comes soon to. Just the tools of my trade really but all quality brands.

Ive not got an integrating sphere in my office if that's what you're thinking

My testing is based on price vs performance at current market rates.

Hey Mark,

I spoke to Teknik last week about this project, my current strips and what i should do , after all was said and done, we decided im just gonna buy more J series and Teknik is gonna help me configure a nice spectrum , going to get you to customize some stuff for the next builds. End result, im gonna need another 50 or 60 J series along with a few more goodies :)

Whats stock currently like on the 3000k 90 cri?

Seems like the photoboost is always sold out, don't have time to wait. What do you recommend that's something similar?

Same complaint everyone has, the strips speak for themselves but When PLC does get stock it seems they are insta sold.
