I'd make sure I bought all the beer she could drink.
She looks like she would only drink the fermented feces of a transvestite goat.....or maybe Boons Farm Strawberry Wine. Same thing.

he was also secretly involved in alchemical research.
Yeah - he was at that point in history when the last of the medieval superstition based stuff was being replaced by the modern scientific methods.
He probably started off attempting stuff like alchemy and then, as his knowledge increased, debunked it.
I seem to remember Dan Brown citing a few Newtonian surprises in Angels and Demons.

no, he embraced alchemy in secret and pursued it until he died.

Newton lived in the 17th century, during the height of the enlightenment, when such occult mummery was frowned upon by thinking men.

of course in the 19th century the occult became a popular affectation, which has greatly damaged modern understanding of actual ancient beliefs and prcatices, much in the way 18th and 19th century orientalism has seriously damaged most people's ability to understand eastern society as it is, rather than the way it is portrayed in the popular consciousness, literature and film.

when you read actual ancient documents about ancient religious practices and beliefs, as well as mysticism and occult theosophy, a very different understanding develops. sadly, due to the catholic and moslem predilection for destroying anything deemed heretical or pagan, many of these works are difficult to find.

edit: wow. it took me a minute to catch that Dan Brown reference.
i instinctively block out Dan Brown, that tosser.
his inane ramblings have done more damage to literature than any author short of L Ron Hubbard.

I quite enjoyed all the peripheral historic and theological tit-bits in Browns novels
But, once you've read one of his books, you've read them all.

But that has done little to damage Clancy, Grisham or a swathe of other modern popular authors
who simply find a successful formula then repeat it, ad infinitum et ad nauseum
