The path to peace for the scientifically inclined, some of the psychologist types are called Buddhist nerds. It is also an endless playground for philosophers of all kinds. This western style Buddhism, practice orientated and not idol worshipping. It's most secular and recent evidence based derivative is the modern mindfulness movement. Buddhism is a mental training system lived inside and ethical and moral framework for western Buddhists and mindfulness practioners. It has many proven benefits and improves psychological health. An example that can change the world. If you think a small group of determined people can't change the world, tell me when it has been otherwise? Is that like jumbo shrimp?

I'm not a Buddhist, though I do teach mindfulness. Secular Buddhist joke a lot and don't take offense, another sign of good mental health.Oh ok. Sorry about the slur.
There seems to be no Western equivalent to the laughing Buddha.I'm not a Buddhist, though I do teach mindfulness. Secular Buddhist joke a lot and don't take offense, another sign of good mental health.
Pure curiosity. Why is Buddha always shown with that big beer gut? It seems in direct contravention of his message.I'm not a Buddhist, though I do teach mindfulness. Secular Buddhist joke a lot and don't take offense, another sign of good mental health.
There are many serious self centered romantic types looking for the secret of life, but some of us know we've already arrived, at least enough for our purposes. Full enlightenment is real and I can show you western examples of those who have ended Dukkha, or suffering (I am not among them), but like anything else, some have a natural propensity and some can never get there. There seems to be no Western equivalent to the laughing Buddha.
That’s nice but does not explain the plain mirth. There are many serious self centered romantic types looking for the secret of life, but some of us know we've already arrived, at least enough for our purposes. Most of the year the Florida Trail isn't crowded. (there is a lot of road walk in my section, so you do see people in cars) But right now is the thru hiker bubble. Most days driving to work I pass a couple three hikers. It seems to be picking up every year.Until recently I had easy access to the Red Hills Area of Critical Environmental Concern. Two times out of three I never saw another soul, and it was like having 20 well-laid trail miles to myself. . . . . . .
Never heard puds, love it! My favorite hike in the hills I named “three times a lady” because there were three distinct ascents that were a serious bMost of the year the Florida Trail isn't crowded. I'm ultra tight, so not a big fan of paying to camp, but the Torreya State Park has the only PUDS (pointless ups and downs) around, so I do a lot of hiking there. I (almost) always go during the week, so it is not uncommon for me not to see another hiker for the 2 or 3 days I'm there. In fact it was the rangers there that gave me my trail name, DA (for dumb ass). No one else turns up to hike in August when it's 95F with 95% humidity. The trails there does see more use in spring and fall, especially on weekends.
The image of the fat laughing Buddha is Chinese and depicts a monk, not the Buddha and some monks were in it for the alms and didn't want to work. Aside from that, meditation makes you happy and MBCT is the premier cure for depression, note I did not say treatment, though it works better than the meds in most cases, takes about 8 weeks. That’s nice but does not explain the plain mirth.
Thanks. Now in 25 words or less explain the belly laughter. The image of the fat laughing Buddha is Chinese and depicts a monk, not the Buddha and some monks were in it for the alms and didn't want to work. It even works for autism, builds out those parts of the brain that process emotion and makes us more aware of our emotional state and that of others by connecting us to our bodies. It can grow a conscience on a fence post and it is taught in an ethical and moral framework for this purpose.
Here is the modern way to learn this stuff, free too. it will give you a feel.

Buddhism is a vehicle. Get in arrive at enlightenment and get out.You should be a secular Buddhist!
For most it is the journey, not the destination, the further you go, the less you suffer anyway, so it's a win win! There are stages of enlightenment.Buddhism is a vehicle. Get in arrive at enlightenment and get out.
yaaaaahh!Buddhism is a vehicle. Get in arrive at enlightenment and get out.
Hikers have a whole other language. One of my favorites (not in the link below) is Shit Tickets for toilet paper. There are way too many normal folks hiking these days, and people will call you out for using names we have used forever. Not to mention lots of hikers make money off YT and they have tightened up their standards. Too many complaints and you can not monetize your channel.Never heard puds, love it! My favorite hike in the hills I named “three times a lady” because there were three distinct ascents that were a serious b

I had no idea that I am a jumbo shrimp. I believe mindfulness works. I'm always interested in learning more. I'm watching Jon Kabat-Zinn's Masterclass now. Works like exercise because it is exercise and a regular practice is important, takes about 8 weeks to get into shape and experience a spectrum of perceptual changes. See my post on the free MBSR course or try a local one is my advice to novices, if you want to go further on the path, there's western secular Buddhism.I had no idea that I am a jumbo shrimp.
