Who says i shouldn't veg with a 600w HPS setup??

Is it a good idea/ ok to vegetate using HPS light?

i had heard is was ok but unnecessary but then the dude at my local hydro store said no, its actually bad because its the wrong spectrum and it will stretch the plants instead of make them dense and bushy. he then said MH was the way to go for veg and tried to sell me a 120.00 conversion bulb. needless to say i dont want to/ cant spend 120.00

what everyone say?

if you have the money, get teh conversion bulb, if not, dont sweat it.

thanks for the words. i dont have the money, but i am only going to have one shot at a grow for quite some time. is it really like make or break?

u CAN veg with ur HPS light i did with my 1000 watter and shitt my harvest came out great take a look. U can veg with any lighting BUT the MH is wayyyyyyyyy better.

It might take longer to veg them on the HPS (to get them where you want) but if its your only option, go ahead. I think you can get bulbs much cheaper then that online. Check it out.

yea but its gotta be the conversion bulb cause i only got an HPS ballast. time is of the essence here. ive got four weeks to veg then i have to flower. my girl moves in late april and that means my other girls have gotta move out late april also.

that is indeed a nice harvest. what strains are they? how long did u veg? how long did u flower?

MH is the ideal spectrum. If you notice, it imitates the sun in the springtime, when the plants are doing thiere vegetative growth. Comparing a HM to a HPS, the HPS might produce slightly more spaced internodes, it will by no means be lanky. MH is better in theory, the question is, will it make more than $120 difference come harvest? GL

the strain is aurora b (flying dutchman) i highlyyy recommend it. i vegged 3-4 weeks and flowered 8 weeeks,

that sucks, just no room? or shes not down with it?

no shes down with the dank just not with the illegal side of growing it. whatever though, its not like im going to ruin a blueberry crop by harvesting too early if its looking real nice. ill just keep the door closed and tell her i like to keep a high pressure sodium light on all my clothes for twelve hours a day.

back on topic. what if i used the 600w HPS but also threw in two cheap flouresecent lights like on the sides of the wall?? would that help?

Try to convince her to have an open mind about your growing.. (just my 2c)


I don't know if you're joking or not, but if you have to lie to her about finishing your plants, I don't know how she could trust you at all anyways.



And yes, the flourescents will help. Just be sure to get the right spectrum - this is more important since you would be using the HPS - it will add some more of the right spectrum and help. Good idea too.

I'm not sure where these various opinions are coming from. There is absolutely nothing wrong with vegging under an HPS. I have been doing just that for many years. MH is a slightly better spectrum, but HPS will work with no problem.

I put my mums in the flowering room under a 600w HPS for 12 hours a day when I know I'll be around for lights out, it seems to make em shoot up a fair bit quicker, especially soon after taking a batch of cuttings.
The last thing I'd wanna do is let a girlfriend in on the fact that I'm growing. Think about it, she gets pissy with you about some stupid shit she wants you to do, and if you tell her no, she can just threaten to grass on you. I don't care if she ain't like that, sooner or later you are gonna have an argument with her (you can't have a relationship without arguing) and she's always got that card, just sat there in her cuff, ready to pull out if things aren't going her way. And who's to say she'd threaten first? If you happened to really piss her off, like forgetting the 13th week anniversary of her moving in with you or some shit, she might just go straight to the cops.
Controversial maybe, but that's my 2c.
