Why don't Republican officials accept science? 3 examples..

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” -Todd Akin rep. Missouri

"God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior." -Paul Broun rep. Georgia

Broun also believes "the Earth is no more than 9,000 years old".

(both of these men are on the US house committee on science, space and technology)

Context;

"If the life of the mother was at risk, would you say she should be allowed to have an abortion?" -reporter

"Let me briefly say, there is no such exception with modern technology and science, you can't find one instance. This is an issue that opponents of life throw out there to make us look unreasonable. There's no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing." -Joe Walsh rep. Illinois

Why do we allow people like this to be making scientific decisions that affect the whole nation if they don't accept science?

unfortunately when they, politicians, are standing on a soapbox they never really tell the public what they will do.
in some cases contributions find a way into the pockets of those that would seek power.

WTF does this have to do with fixing our country? So if republican's favor life thats somehow a war? Even if abortions are banned on a federal level, the decisions will go back to the individual states per Roe v. Wade of the supreme court. Save some tax dollars from planned parenthood in the process

More fail from the "oh the horror," brigade. Why do we let politicians, like Obama, make decisions based on emotion rather than reality? This needs to stop. You don't let lawyers operate, you get a surgical doctor. But politicians are all god!

I'd agree with you in certain cases, but in each of these three examples, I think each of them truly believe what they're saying, it's not just influence from a third party. This seems like a big problem with serious consequences.

Science, space and technology have quite a bit to do with saving our economy as well as the country.

If republicans vote against accepted scientific findings, it hurts all of us.

Romney has stated he would abolish Roe v. Wade if he becomes president.

No politician should make decisions based on emotion. Unfortunately that's not an impeachable offense and a question for another thread.

Would you mind addressing the question posed in the OP?

It seems that God is really the one to blame for all this! [sarcasm]

But srsly, the idea of God has too much influence in US politics......I'm kinda tired of the 'they are in our thoughts and prayers' statement that comes after every big news story! LOL!

Opposing view on such a committee are beneficial imo. They challenge the popular belief.

There is a clear difference between challenging and denial. To say evolution is a lie is not a challenge, it's a display of scientific ignorance. This is not something we expect from someone on a science committee.

If I tell a doctor that putting a cast on a broken bone is a waste of time, am I challenging him, or just being ignorant?

Lets not forget this...

Here’s what the Republican Party of Texas wrote into its 2012 platform as part of the section on education:

Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

i still say that dissenting opinion serves it's purpose if everyone else is on their game. If for no other reason than to blatantly point out what NOT to consider.

1. To my knowledge Romney did not say he would overturn Roe v. Wade if he becomes President. He said he wants the courts to.

2. Contrary to liberal spin, overturning Roe v. Wade does not outlaw abortion.

3. I once blamed Republicans for being ignorant to facts regarding things like evolution, but I have been surprised to find out many are not that way. Most recently Boortz called for him to step down from the science committee for the exact reasons you listed (he also believes in evolution). Goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover and that collectivism is ignorance.

Heisenberg,
Evolution is a lie. It's supposed to be accepted as fact, so we are to deny anything else. That's no different than creation. There are many other potentials like: panspermia. But that's nonsense talk!

Evolution explains how life changes over time. It makes no attempts to explain how life began. If evolution is a lie, it is one that mother nature herself is engaged in. Evolution is simply an explanation of the evidence we find when we go looking.

Science is not a democracy. We do not favor evolution theory simply because it has 51% of the vote. We favor it because it has stood up to 150 years of rigorous attempts to falsify it. It is not meant to be taken as fact. The work is there for you to review. The process is completely transparent. No one is hiding the theory or asking you to blindly accept it.

Can you tell me what the difference is? He said he'll appoint justices who will overturn the case.

What does overturning Roe v. Wade do? Limit the amount of time an abortion can legally take place? Limit the current 28 week limit to something less?

Most GOP politicians are steadfast against accepted science, including evolution and stem cell technology. Anything that conflicts with the biblical account of reality.

Evolution is a fact. Anyone who understands it accepts it. Those that don't, don't understand it, and it's as simple as that. Their beliefs conflict with it so they decide to discard it as psuedoscience. Unfortunately they contend with 99% of the scientific community who accepts it as fact.

Are 99% (more than 100,000 scientists worldwide) of those that accept it conspiring against religious dogma?

Evolution as proposed by Darwin, is false. DNA isn't the only factor. There are extra genetic factors which get passed on from environmental conditions, learning. Panspermia can rapidly mutate. Evlolution isn't the only answer and definitely not fact.

lol

well I won't take to much part in this discussion, do have a opinion on US politics, but since Im from Denmark (scandinavia) I don't think it my place to do so ..

tho I keep see/hear one thing on TV from the Republicans (we do get a lot of news on the US election here in Europe, as it do impact us who you elect in the end)

that annoys me so much, hope the American Ppl. is´t so stupid that they eat it ?

they claim that the hugh unemployment and bad economy is Obamas fault !!!

what plant is they living on ?? the whole world is having a economic crisis, and if anybody did start it, it must be the previous government, in my mind they actually make them self look bad ..

I actualy think it would have lookd a lot worse if not for Obama, but like in my country it must be hard to make YOUR politics when the "other" side will do what ever it can to make you look bad and stop all you try to do even if it make sense ..

in my mind the problem with Democracy (got many Im sure but the biggest) is that the one who get elected (no matter what parti) will use more energy to stay in office then to do what is best for the country, from day one, if any company should be run like that they wouldn't last for long ..

Darwin did not know about DNA. You do not seem to have an informed opinion. It appears you are opposed to some idea of evolution you have in your head which does not coincide with the actual theory of evolution. This would explain why your objections contain nothing more than "nu uh" without providing any substance.
