I always thought you could mine asteroid fields and planets easier if you were it use runway sized "Rail Guns" to fire freight into space, an opposing brake rail gun on a docking station or from another planet or outpost into earth's outer orbit. Ion rockets only really work in space but if you fired a barge or a large rock with a guided ion rocket strapped to it like a JATO you could maneuver it using thrust vectoring from point to point. The initial outlay would be expensive but once you set it up it would be considerably cheaper than conventional methods to supply and maintain a space based mining operation. Maybe I've played too many computer games. Dunno...what were we talking about? 200,000w antimatter HID? That would grow some mad shit.

Whats ironic about this thread is CoockooJax is whining that Obama is cutting back NASA (a GOVERNMENT program) funding.

Instead, Obama would spend $6 billion a year for five years to support commercial spacecraft development and pursue new technologies to explore the solar system in what the White House called "a more effective and affordable way." http://asia.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20100311/tbs-obama-space-7318940.html

So Obama is encouraging space flight from the private sector, something CoockooJax SHOULD BE in favor of but instead the idiot bashes Obama over it and cries socialism. Apparently Coockoo is a socialist if it serves his purpose to bash Obama.
First...... let me just say.... hahahah!!

Okay...whew.

Nasa is one of the very few black holes of federal spending that actually PRODUCES something at the end of the day.

If you read up on the canceled program the intent was to get PRIVATE enterprise to do the heavy lifting...Nasa is the bus to get the industry up there.

Think it through.

What do you think the hourly pay would be to go to the moon as a high tech miner?

Obama killed the only govt. program that might actually solve ALL of our energy problems....

and still some defend him.... it's laughable....put ur thinking caps on...and ur political ones OFF.

I just call them the way they are. If McCain head been elected...and canceled this program...my thread would look EXACTLY the same....except for one word.

Rise above the politics if you can, and see it for what IT IS.

They don't want to solve the energy crisis. They wish to use it to control the populations. Hard to do when 400 years worth comes back from the moon with maximum fanfare.

I see, so you are for government ran programs unless Obama is for those same programs, gotcha.

Hardly.... most govt. programs Obama is pushing are money black holes with ZERO return capability.

Way to not think it through though.... good job.

so you're saying the moon is floating because of "helium-3"?
I think you might be up for a Nobel for that one...

if the President can get a Nobel "peace" prize while fighting two wars....you surely deserve one as well...

CJ, can you open your mind enough to argue against yourself? Present evidence that backs up Obama's decision?

And perhaps others who disagree with CJ can present evidence why Obama made a mistake...

I've posted this before...

If a scientist has preconceived opinions at the start of an experiment, it's like driving without using all the mirrors. You ARE going to miss findings...

I am an atheist because I studied all the evidence of ALL religions, and drew a conclusion.

Not because a Catholic beat me up in elementary school. (Completely fictional, of course)

Why should I argue AGAINST the greatest achievement man can accomplish in our lifetimes????

Try answering that for me.

So, can I now safely assume that all of you are PRO OIL? Because that is what we are going to be using for quite some time to come. PRO Tanker leaks?

I see this for what it IS..... perhaps the greatest OPPORTUNITY that science has ever placed before us.

Great RISK often yields great REWARDS.

Again.... this is the issue that could have put Obama on Mt. Rushmore..... and that's a no sh*t there. I would help myself. I would PRAISE him.

====================================================================================================================================

Here it is....2012.... from out of nowhere comes a man named CrackerJax.....and steals the nomination away from Ron Paul!

One of the very first things I do is give this drafted speech (not polished yet):

My Countrymen.... I stand before you with a goal. The time for bickering over energy supplies must come to an end. Several of my predecessors have been bogged down in wars over Oil (isn't that what Bush was accused of ), and this has harmed our nation, and others. We have had millions of tons of oil spill into our oceans, rivers, and beaches. It has harmed our nation ... and others.

As your President, from this day forward until I leave office, I will commit this nation to becoming energy free. I will work towards this goal to STOP global warming. We needn't burn coal any longer. We needn't burn gases. We can stop our carbon output to the point of it being negligible.

I will work towards making peace with our adversaries. As President, I propose to build a Consortium of nations with space capability and desires TOGETHER (emphasis).

No longer will Russia, the Chinese, Indians, and others be at odds over their goals. We will ALL go to the Moon TOGETHER. This is not a mission for one nation alone. No....this is a GROUP effort.

My countrymen, my fellow global citizens (music plays).... it is time to put down our differences...which do seem important in the present. I promise I will do everything in my power to make sure that in the future, when you look back, those differences will be diminished.

A new future awaits mankind, and it will take all of us...working together...creating JOBS...creating a CHANGE for the BETTER for ALL mankind. Creating a time in history that the future generations will look back and say.... "They did their best by us".

We can rise to the occasion. We WILL rise to the occasion. I declare it wholly and honestly to you today. Follow the USA to the stars. Let us all COME TOGETHER and share in the bounty which lies in your vision each night like a beacon on a hill.

This I do pledge this day.

come on cracker! this is not an either/or situation. taking all those metric tons from the mass of the moon is just asking to throw thing out of balance... i can see it now "reduced moon mass sends earths natural satellite out of historic orbit" ha ha ha ha. then we can REALLY worry about climate change ha ha ha

seriously, making this an either/or question is not seeing the bigger picture.

I think there is a much simpler explanation to this.
The hippies hated LBJ for the space program, that the money would be better spent on social programs. They are in power now.
The left hated Bush for basically anything he did, and this was one of his initiatives.
There is no financial element to this, the amount of money cut in the space program is insignificant to the rest of the budget. This was a pure ideological and political decision.
There are a few good reasons for public funding high-tech workers and research, as it benefits the economy as a whole on a small scale, just as government grants for research do. As for any other reasons for going there, I don't think energy is on the list.

what political experiences do you have cracker, other than forum blathering. i have no idea if you were born in the US or how old you are(or will be in 2yrs). i would vote for someone who delivered a speech like that, but if i knew it was you id vote for obama again just to twist your panties. your speech wouldnt be anything like that though. your hired speech writers would pull it apart and the illuminati would still have their hand up your ass(so to speek). im almost to a point where im no longer cocerned with the direction this country is going. im just going to keep floating allong not giving a fuck about politics and enjoying my life till i die or the world changes or ends

You have this absolute position, and refuse to acknowledge any other possibilities...Kinda like religion...

1. Solar Energy
The sun is our most powerful source of energy. Sunlight, or solar energy, can be used for heating, lighting and cooling homes and other buildings, generating electricity, water heating, and a variety of industrial processes. Most forms of renewable energy come either directly or indirectly from the sun. For example, heat from the sun causes the wind to blow, contributes to the growth of trees and other plants that are used for biomass energy, and plays an essential role in the cycle of evaporation and precipitation that makes hydropower possible.

2. Wind Energy
Wind is the movement of air that occurs when warm air rises and cooler air rushes in to replace it. The energy of the wind has been used for centuries to sail ships and drive windmills that grind grain. Today, wind energy is captured by wind turbines and used to generate electricity.

3. Hydropower
Water flowing downstream is a powerful force. Water is a renewable resource, constantly recharged by the global cycle of evaporation and precipitation. The heat of the sun causes water in lakes and oceans to evaporate and form clouds. The water then falls back to Earth as rain or snow, and drains into rivers and streams that flow back to the ocean. Flowing water can be used to power water wheels that drive mechanical processes. And captured by turbines and generators, like those housed at many dams around the world, the energy of flowing water can be used to generate electricity.

4. Biomass Energy
Biomass has been an important source of energy ever since people first began burning wood to cook food and warm themselves against the winter chill. Wood is still the most common source of biomass energy, but other sources of biomass energy include food crops, grasses and other plants, agricultural and forestry waste and residue, organic components from municipal and industrial wastes, even methane gas harvested from community landfills. Biomass can be used to produce electricity and as fuel for transportation, or to manufacture products that would otherwise require the use of non-renewable fossil fuels.

5. Hydrogen
Hydrogen has tremendous potential as a fuel and energy source, but the technology needed to realize that potential is still in the early stages. Hydrogen is the most common element on Earth—for example, water is two-thirds hydrogen—but in nature it is always found in combination with other elements. Once separated from other elements, hydrogen can be used to power vehicles, replace natural gas for heating and cooking, and to generate electricity.

6. Geothermal Energy
The heat inside the Earth produces steam and hot water that can be used to power generators and produce electricity, or for other applications such as home heating and power generation for industry. Geothermal energy can be drawn from deep underground reservoirs by drilling, or from other geothermal reservoirs closer to the surface.

7. Ocean Energy
The ocean provides several forms of renewable energy, and each one is driven by different forces. Energy from ocean waves and tides can be harnessed to generate electricity, and ocean thermal energy—from the heat stored in sea water—can also be converted to electricity. Using current technologies, most ocean energy is not cost-effective compared to other renewable energy sources, but the ocean remains and important potential energy source for the future.

I'm not saying that the moon rocks wouldn't solve the problem, they may, BUT WE DON'T KNOW THE CONSEQUENCES! You can't tell me what would happen, you can only speculate. Doesn't that bother you at ALL? If you look to the moon alone, and invest all of your attention blindly on one option, you're worshiping it.

Definitions of worship:

idolize: love unquestioningly and uncritically or to excess; venerate as an idol; "Many teenagers idolized the Beatles"
show devotion to (a deity); "Many Hindus worship Shiva"
the activity of worshipping
attend religious services; "They worship in the traditional manner"
a feeling of profound love and admiration
