Whys is everyone using CFL's?

technically blue light is for vegetation as it grows the best foliage.. hps grows the best stems and flowers...

so you should be using metal halide....

but i use florescents over MH because they run cooler, i dont need to air cool them, and above all i get tighter node spacing which is very nice.

a lot of people who are just getting into growing don't necessarily want to invest in nice equipment for what may turn out to be a passing hobby.

a lot of people are doing small box stealth grows and rigging a hood in a small space isn't always ideal. if someone has limited space they don't want to lose 6 inches of it to a hood.

cfls have a much lower startup cost.
a lot of people are too paranoid to even have that equipment in their house. cfls can always be explained away.

cfls do a fine job for vegging a smaller crop. some people wouldn't be able to go perpetual without them.

cfls are good for cutting one's teeth. better lights only equal better pot when the grower has a clue to begin with.

you can mix the spectrum with cfls.

why all the hate for cfls? i don't use them myself but i have in the past and they do the job just fine. if someone can pull weight with cfls then bravo to them. it takes skill to pull that off.

I'm not trying to be contrary but I thought I'd mention I use 2700k for seedlings and veg and have super tight nodes.

did you forget what the corporations and the bankers that robbed americans blind and they then gave them even more money that is probably why lol
I was away from RIU for a while and now it seems as though most people on here are using cfls to grow. What ever happend to the good ole HPS? Can you cfl growers tell me why the attraction to cfl's? I dont get it. They are less efficient than the hps. They just dont make sense to me so please help make sense of it all.

heres a quote from Jorge Cervantes' Growers Bible :

page 171(in my copy) chapter nine(Lighting, Lamps and Electricity)

SIDE LIGHTING:

"side lighting is generally not as effiecient as lighting from above. Verticallly oriented lamps without reflectors are efficient, but require plant to be oriented around the bulb. To promote growth, light must penetrate the dense foliage of a garden. The lamps are mounted where light intensity is marginal-along the walls-to provide sidelight.
Compact fluorescent lamps are not a good choice for side lighting when using HID lamps. (see"comact fluorescent Lamps" for more information)."

I dont know what to think of this because I have already found soooo many inconsistencies in this book(great book just needs a good edit), so Im not sure what to make of this. The book later goes on to explain that you can grow cannabis from seed to harvsest with CFL lighting so im not sure why it says you cant use it in combo with HID...

any oppinions/insights?

Oh Yea?? Will I don't see anything that says u know wha evaaaaaa :eyesmoke:JK!
I know some folks can't do outside like me and I have tried the inside growing 1 time only with good resalts
9 plants 1 pound of great bud. I ran 400 wattrs x2 HD at $80.00 a month for the power bill.
I went out side 6 plants and 4lbs great bud $00 per month for the light.
I had no problems with bugs lucky me but I'm doing it again next year.:peace:
dumbest thread evaaaaaa

I use them to supplement natural sunlight during Winter months, Mr. Sun just doesn't cut it in December, without the CFL's I would have stretch issues and airy bud. I'm finding you can really crank it up with the right bulbs. I'm running 42W's currently, but just found 105's that will do nicely.

Can't wait to try these!

I feel naked without something growing, love the outdoors(more sun=better bud)but no way I'm taking 6 months off every year.

I would argue the heat issue. A watt of light puts pretty close to the same amount of heat no matter what type it is. And when you say it is cheaper it all depends how you look at it. Initial cost may be cheaper but you are losing money through your light bill due to the fact that cfls are more inefficient and have a much faster lumen depreciation over the life of the bulb. As far as the space issue I have seen hps's in pc cases.

If a light is more efficient it will put of less heat. It converts more energy into light compared to heat.

well for me it was because I am a girl and not a handy one.... I cant cut a hole in my ceiling to extract the heat if I use HPS. also cant build some kind of fancy box. so CFL dont produce a lot of heat and it is very easy for me to have a little set up in my closet. pretty much thats why I do it.
