Pizzapuffer,
what do you mean by penetration? i feel this is a word thrown around with no meaning. A photon of non uv will not penetrate a leaf. when lower canopy bud is larfy and does not devolpe fully it is because enough light did not reach it. Inverse square law of indoor lighting has nothing to do with penetration, rather totaly YPF. if someone bought a cheap shitty LED that only pulled 200 watts it will not produce very many photons. Has nothing to do with penetration has to do with total photons produced. a big led array that produces lots of light will "penetrate" just as well as any HPS. Shitty LEDs are shitty. Good LEDs are good. There are not many good LEDs and lots of companys sell snake oil. Take a look in the led section and you will some a few getten it done

go look at side by side grows LED vs HPS. HPS always wins. even the good LEDs like the 5watt ones that high times advertises the solar storm is a no comparison. it has everything to do with penetration. if you grow big plants you want your lower buds to be nice and dense. LEDs wont do it. none of them that i seen yet. i hate how people try and use bullshit scientific claims that they think they know what they're talking about to justify that something is better. get both lighting sources, grow them side by side in the same conditions. you will see what wins every time. i dont personally know a single person that switched to LEDs. everyone i know that tried them went back to HPS. The only thing competing right now is the plasma lights. and im not talking your little 4x4 closet grows. these people have 4-6+ hps lights in just a single room. LEDs are great for side lighting though. maybe if your growing small plants LEDs would be better, but why the fuck would you want to do that? gotta stay within legal limits.

Hey Pizzapuffer,
gavatia will tell you there light is not a stand alone light for high demand plants. However check out the Heavy T grow show review on Black Dog LED. I use the light even more powerful than what they tested. episode 62 http://www.dufffreezone.com/past-show-podcasts/archives-jun-dec-2012/ i will try and find when they talk about it so you dont have to listen to 3 hours of talk. right now i would guess about min 25. also black dog has the link on their press page.

Let me try to clear the air on PENETRATION

LEDs typically come with lenses over the diodes. Common lenses include 60 90 & 120. The smaller the number, the more concentrated the spectrum over a given area. You would not want to use 120 degree lenses to grow 4ft+ plants, but 120 would be terrific for short plants/scrog. Also if you raise a 120 lens 12" above the canopy you have pretty much negated what it can do. 60 degree is best for a ~ 4ft plant

In Hans' panels, he mixes 'lenses' in his 'lens' face (don't know what else to call it).

IMHO, the biggest (well second biggest, the first being true watts) is the lie that all a plant needs is B/R. While it is true mj mostly needs B/R, it is the other spectrums that in essence are the super chargers. This is only coming to 'light' (npi) in the last year. Now, the oter spectrums come in white diodes, which again, until recently were too inefficient. No more. Crees newest XP- series whites kick ass.

I'm guessing they will rival Induction lighting, at a MUCH lower price (the Indagrow 420 is $800). PLUS, unlike Induction bulbs, the deep and far reds are easily incorporated into a panel.

Still, for now I am sticking to best mj grow bargain around- HO T5s using 54w aquarium bulbs to simulate led spectrums. Efficient, almost zero radiant heat. A 432 w fixture covers a 2 X 4 area for ~ $350; smaller sizes are available

Check out my journal to see it in action 3- 4 weeks from harvest

I ran a side by side test w/ a Blackstar LED and a 400 watt HPS in my grow for a couple months.

The myth that the LED was comparable to the 400 HPS was exactly that, a myth.

Not saying LED wont grow, it will. Just not as well as HID lighting.

Someone mentioned that their plants use less water and nutes with the LED. That alone tells you all you should need to know.

Can you verify that your Blackstar was in fact 400 watts?

LEDs do not have the radiant heat of hid lighting, so the plants don't go though the WATER

That said, they are still too expensive

I ran 240 watt Blackststar, the one that says in its advertising that its equal to a 400 watt HID

They ran next to eachother, they are not equal. In fact i sold that LED to someone and its toast now. Lasted less than 2 years. POS

I put my 2 240watt Blackstars over my seedlings and Clones. Theya re great for that. I keep them about 18" off the top and the seedlings are loving it.

Why did you ignore the posting of this video?
You keep saying leds are shit but you ignore the results.
There are a lot more videos on that channel comparing LED to HPS and the LED out does the HPS in GPW and yeild.
Watt for Watt LED is better than HPS.

"LED using 455 watts produced 406.9g HPS using 484 watts produced 204.6g"
