Will steel hurt hydroponics?

it shouldn't. what can happen however is rust, which can make it difficult to unscrew. otherwise, no problem. the metal shouldn't transfer into the water or cause problems.

I would worry about steel on a long term grow, but not 3-4 months indoors. hydro growers tend to change the water enough to where it really shouldn't be a problem. The low acid leaching thing is true, but I bet you could do it just fine. or use plastics.
