Hello world of hempy!

I run traditional hempy 2 gallons 75 perlite/25 vermicuite, but have been recently trying to read up on coco hempy, or growers on here who use coco hempys. If any of you could help me head in the right direction I would love to do coco hempys on this upcoming run and see the difference. Also any nutrient lines or coco brands that you coco users could suggest and any tips or pointers i would really appreciate it. Thank you very much

hey mr magoo, glad to see you found the WOH

coco is something I may try one day, but I also like keeping it simple....hope to see you posting pics of huge hempy plants

So if I understand correctly, perlite is for aeration and vermiculite is for holding water? So a 50/50 mix would be good for a hempy right?

600w hps probably 2-3' from the plants
I biggest bucket I have used is 3 gallons.... they typically need watering every 4 to 5 days

I'm bewildered when you say 2-3' from the plants...inches or feet? inches would be way too close...feet would be way too far

I was thinking feet. My light isn't very height adjustable so I'll have to build my stand taller. The optimal distance for an air cooled 600w is 16-18 inches right? and ' with 1 mark is feet, " with 2 marks is inches.

I keep my 600 watt HPS about 10-12 inches from the mature plants, without an air cooled hood

Alright, I'll see what I can do. How high should my drain hole be for a 5 liter (roughly 1 gallon) bucket?

EDIT: I was way off. I can lower my lights to TOUCH the plants if I wanted to.

I've never been fond of vermiculite, but have used a 60/40 perlite/coco mix and really liked it. I've settled on
a 100% perlite bucket with a 3-4 inch cap of coco.

I can go 4-5 days early flower and 2-4 days late flower
between watering with 2gal buckets in a scrog setup under 250w HPS.

I have used the 5 liter sterlite handy pails with great success. If this is what you are using,
2-3" from the bottom of the pail is good. The buckets taper to the bottom slightly so I went a
bit more than 2".

I've run lots of coco hempys. It doesn't really matter what size the construction is the same. Fill with medium to coarse perlite to above the hole. Then coco from there on up. I've done just straight coir, and it works fine, but I liked my results better when cutting the coir with fine perlite, or chunky coco. I'm sure it has to do with holding more air and getting better drainage. Any nute will work with the coco, there are coco specific nutes wihich I've never used so I can't tell you if it makes a difference. One difference in feeding between perlite and coco is that coco has a natural affinity with cal & mag. So you'll have to add extra cal/mag when using coco. From what I've heard Coco specific nutes will generally take care of this problem.

As far as which coco to use there are a lot of options Here My Favorite Coco

Thank you very much wattsaver, is coco reusable, that's really one of the reasons I'm looking to change up my hempys, there's only so much perlite I can dump around the yard and garden... And cleaning and reusing the perlite seems a bigger hassle from what I have read, getting all the roots out, and how light perlite is...

I suppose I could always use perlite filled to above the hole, in the res, and then just soil the rest, or has anyone used the hydroponic clay balls as they are reusable?

Clay balls (hydroton) would probably be bad for hempy because it holds basically no water. I guess if your roots make it to the res you'd be okay but I still think it's too dry

Hi all,
Just a few pics of the clones from Black Widow 1 and BW5. I started 12/12 two weeks ago. Had to do some super cropping on day 11 of 12/12 but they do not seem any worse for ware, they have taken off big time. Mutation problem seems to have stopped and all is well on day 14 of 12/12.

This is on one side of my closet, the light is hung from the clothes rod and you can see how stretchy the BW's are. This pic was taken just before I super cropped on 3/26, after I did the super cropping I realized that was only a quick fix for the height the plants will get under this light. So I built a light holder, see pics below.

This is the top half of my new light holder. You can see where the clothes rod is located and why I decided to build the holder

This is the bottom half of the light holder

The canopy is fairly even

Many bud sites

Super Cropping done on 3/26, I always tape the area, no problems just habit.

You can see them turning skyward and look at the secondary branching, this will be a good thing

These 7 ladies are going into the cabinet when their parents have finished in about 3 weeks, they will be 5 weeks at that point and will finish them under a 400W HPS.

I second using any hydroton above the rez, unless its a capping layer on top of a perlite bucket just to hold everything in place.

As far as recycling the medium, most people will recycle coco no more than 3 times. Perlite can be reused for as long as you want. To separate the most medium from the roots let the bucket dry out completely. It's not unusual for me to let a finished bucket sit around for a month before I break it down.
To get rid of all the old roots you can use hygrozyme or some other "zyme" product the first couple of waterings in a new bucket of recycled material. It will dissolve the old roots.

Hey GR, that pvc light hanger rack is the second great McGuiver I've seen this week (ISK has the other) I think I enjoy these moments of ingenuity more than the buds.

Edit:
Just lit another J let me think about that last statement. :eyesmoke:

Ahh yes my friend, the buds are why we are here, the ideas come from the smoke gods, they bless us with the knowledge.

Edit:
Just did a big bowl of Mr B's C3, let me think about that last stalemate! bongsmilie
