Ahhh I was going to ask about that. Did you find a nice cheap place to get bottles from? I found the cheapest to be budget water from supermarkets.

How are you going to darken the bottles. Paint or Tape? Its going to take a bit of time prepping 100+ but once done you reuse the hempys again and again.

Edit:

re: Sub panel? Whats that? . ... No, I can't deal with electrical work. Just regular fusebox. I'm probably pushing it with 3 x 600W because I also have 16 flush mounted lights with 100W bulbs in them. ..... On the plus side, I have just bought an Samsung LED TV, they use a lot less power.

Actually, No joking. ... What is a Sub panel? and why should I be using one?

Great post Dalek.

Im YOYO'ing between both schools of thought on letting the res dry out or not.

I didnt know about the ph swing up/down at veg and flower. Thanks. Can you tell us a bit more about the K.I.S.S method you mentioned.
Hempy himself stated that he was against drying out. From my research this guy (screen named) "Earl" did this dry out thing, and Hempy refuted this practice.I have a small res,and I use Dyna Gro Pro Tekt to help me when times I cannot feed in time.

I say feed when you can to reset the ph,and plants sometimes take up little water while it takes up nutes so one would be reseting the res all together.I look at my plant and go with my gut on how much run off I go for.Basicly if res is low then little run off.If little res was used for a couple feeds then I shoot for more run off because more nutes than water may have been used.

I see Hempy style as DWC without the airstone. The way I see it the roots get there O2 from the res hole on up,and a few shakes of my nute jug helps the feeder roots aswell.

K.I.S.S. method is a perfect union for Hempy. No ph pens or ppm/tds meters needed.Just do not be color blind, and learn to read your plants.

Pay for bottles ha. I got them all for free except for a couple that I purchase. Once in a while I get the need for taste of soda. I got them all out of the neighborhood bins on recycle day before the recycle truck comes by to pick them up. As far as darken the bottles I may try your method using gorilla tape because I tried a can of flat black paint and it only lasted up to about 20 2ls. Also I think I'm going to get impatient with the clones so if I cut some small clones then I will just veg them for about 10 days before the 12/12.

A electric sub panel is an additional circuit breaker that is used if i exceed my capacity of my current breaker. Do use 120 volt plugs for your 600 watter? I use 240v plugs for mine that go into my subpanel.

The Ch9 Cluster I showed earlier in this thread is now at 51 days. Just a little 2g hempy bucket (coco atop/perlite res). DALAI HEMPY is the master....here is an example of his teachings in my 5th grow with his method.

F'ng nice. Is that straight 12/12 from clone?

Here are a couple of C99's started in my 2g buckets. I typically start sprouts in Solo cups (mini-hempy's) until they are 3" across. This time I figured I would simplify the procedure and just place the germ'ed seeds straight into the buckets.....roots were always circling the cups before so why bother with a morphed root structure that is suddenly set free and the time for the entanglement to reach the res down low? I'll keep you updated if this shortens my veg time any. I'll bet my base stems is fatter this time......and I like's me some fat stems.

Hey Hempy World! Been having some steady computer problems and haven't been able to check in on you guys. But I got my new laptop in the mail yesterday so I am ready to rock now.

Here is an update on my small scale, hempy scrog. Both strains are a mystery, although the one I call "U1" I am pretty sure is the blueberry that I grew out last round.
Edit: Forgot to mention they are day 22 since 12/12 and showed solid budsets at about 10 days.

Nice one Georgy boy.

So are you (and plants) preferring the Coco over the Verm/Perl ?

I'm about ready to start tonight with this Mapito (Rockwool and Coco), I'll do some side by side comparisons too.
The coco has pretty much completely won me over already. It was cheaper, there is no harmful dust in the preparation, the plants have grown considerably larger in the same amount of time, it looks nicer, it is a renewable resource....the list goes on and on. I would like to say that all my future grows with synthetic nutrients will be in coco, but I have a 4 cubic foot bag of vermiculite and 2 50 gallon bags of perlite. The perlite would get used up in time but I don't know where I would use the verm if I don't do more of these 50/50 hempys. I've got a couple friends that have been growing on a super micro scale lately; maybe I will just give them the verm and a bag of the perlite.

Nice setup georgyboy, the plants look to be loving the coco base. I have been running the perlite, but I really want to try something new and experiment a bit. Maybe a side by side comparison with coco and PBRH.

I am looking forward to your mapito grow Moebius. I hear lots of great things about this hempy style.

I have to say I’m on the let em’ dry out side of the fence I believe this stimulates root growth. You can’t let them go completely dry or else they will wilt, which I seem to do at least once in every grow. From what I’ve seen drying is most important during transplant to larger/final bucket. I did some side by sides on this quite a while back, where I water one of the new transplants lightly everyday till the root hit the rez and just leaving it alone until the rez was pretty much exhausted. I did this 2 grows in a row, and at the end of 2 wks the leave it alone plants were larger and stronger. The leave it alone buckets would show less growth during the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] 4 to 5 days but would hit the rez sooner and would pass & leave the other behind. And now I look forward to the week of nothing to do.

As far as watering I like to get 25% runoff, and I water at a high rate or speed. My theory (no scientific data, just previous studies in fluid flow) is that if you water slowly you’re just mixing the new water with the air that is already in the bucket, where as if you can create a solid column of water flushing through the medium you will exhaust the old air out the hole and by means of a vacuum created by a solid column of water pull fresh air in behind, hence the need for some overflow. I know that with my current outdoor girl the roots have created such a tight mat in the soil cap that by the time I dump a gal of water in I’ll have at least an inch of standing water on top of the medium, and if I put my finger over the hole I’ll see air bubbles come up through the soil, so there has to be some truth to my theory, just can’t say if it really makes any difference.

Concerning feeding I can’t comment. I’ve simplified my feeding system to the point where there is no concern on my part, other than ph’ing the water.

Root growth in mid - late flowering? Does this happen guys? I always thought not.

I have to say that when I ignored my plants last time and gave them a feed every 6-7 day with non EC'ed or pH'ed feed the buds came out very resinous. Completely anecdotal I know. .. However, I would like to feed them at least every 3-4 days with adjusted nutes. When cells plant or animal dry, they die.

Its near impossible to wrap tape around an empty bottle. Its possible if filled with water but not as neat as an unopened bottle with its pressure.

I tried a spray can too. No good. Like you say, ran out too quick (and its messy). I considered plasticized/rubberized paint but its too expensive.

Just for the record: The neatest bottles are made using unopened 2L then wrapped with Gorilla tape, then emptied... I paid 17p or 17c per 2L water bottle. 17$ or 17£ for 100.

Edit:
The 'Extra Wide' 3" Gorilla tape is the easiest. It takes 3 strips each 12.57" inches long to cover a 2L bottle. 37.71" per bottle.

The 27M (1063" inches) roll will cover 28.18 bottles (excluding wastage).

There is still root growth throughout the plants life, it does slow down late in flower, it may even stop at one point. Like I mentioned before the later in flower my buckets go the slower the water perk rate is, and I can see a thicker root mat while I'm watering as time goes on. And I generally only veg for an additional 5 days after transplanting into the hempy bucket. So 98 percent of all the root growth in my buckets is during 12/12. I read your post Moe and went and stuck my camera into my bucket outdoors to get a root shot. I just brushed the floater perlite out of the way for this shot, hope it shows up + it's just another reason to post a pic of this girl, not bad for a 15 gen + clone.

Wow .. Whats that you got in the third pic? Looks like a gallon of piss. Whatever it is your multi-headed monster is loving it.

.. I know root growth goes on in 12-12. but much of 12-12 the plant is still in the Veg stage. .... I thought once flowering started proper that the root growth would slow to an almost stop. ... I'm really just going by what I've experienced and not through reading.

Maybe this is strain dependent too ... Sativa's taking longer to flower therefore root growth continuing longer. Hmmm . Food for thought.

Edit:

RIU really needs to let me add people +REP

This evening I made up my Mapito Hempy buckets.

I had 40 Exodus fem seeds + 5 fem Lemon Skunk seeds. 2 Exodus Failed. The popped Seeds where placed in 1" rockwool cubes to sprout.

I then filled the 2L bottles with the dry Mapito to the top. And pressed down, remembering grow mediums often settle when watered.

I took a little Mapito from the top out so that I could place the Rockwool cube seedling on top.

I then covered the top 1.5 inch with Hydroton. It really does a good job of filling in an excess gaps, will prevent algae, and reduce evaporation.

I have 27 Mapito buckets with Exodus and 4 with Lemon skunk. ...... + 1 bucket of each strain I made from a soil/traditional hempy mix.
10 Exodus Cheese seedlings have been potted for Moms.

Hey WattSaver...yes I have seen those time release fert gell balls in Hempy before, but I prefer direct control of res.

For me once root establishes in res I no longer have concern for them.My moms in Hempy cups (22-24 oz) after about 3-4 months will show signs of rootbound.I hold the plant in the cup and flip over on it's side to drain.Once empty the suction is gone for easy pop out.I then take a sterile/sharp knife and horizontaly cut the root/medium half way between hole and bottom of cup.I then refill cup with fresh sterile medium slightly higher than the volume lost from the root pruning.I put mom back in and she is good to go for another 3-4 mo or if I decide to replace with clone.

You are still on the fence on the near dry thing eh?Well maybe this experiment I did last year will give you food for thought.
I wanted a way to keep a Hempy mom healthy while on say a weeks vacation.I took a gallon bucket, and let mother establish in said bucket.I then took a deep bin to put gal pot with mom in,and propped her up from bottom by about 6".From my DWC days I know that in veg the PH will swing up,so I put about 2 gallons of nute solution set at 5.5 Ph in the bin just shy of bucket bottom.I then put a little submersible pump in the filled bin ,and put it on 1 minute a day with a digital timer. After 1 week with just me observing and under about 23 watts of 6500k cfl she survived. Not only did she survive but she had the most lushious growth I ever seen with Hempy especialy under minimal wattage. The Ph was a little above 6.5.So when you let the res run near dry you are in effect giving it a Ph swing that hits peak points of certain nute uptakes.Since I use cups in a micro grow I rather reset the target Ph than let a stressfull dry out to happen.

I just dump the water in.I all ready stated what I beleive O2 for the roots go.Feeder roots for water/nutes.Area between taproot, and drain hole for O2.I shake nute jug for extra DO for feeder roots.

Hempy's analogy of the res being like the water table that a real life situation plant grows it's roots too is as simple as it gets.

Here is a Hempy cup Spacequeen pic.

I have been looking for a light proof cup for my grow.So far I have two of these saved.I have not modified and tried yet but will build up a collection.

Here are trays from Texas that will fit my cab perfectly when I have some extra scratch. https://www.rollitup.org/stealth-micro-cab-growing/552803-found-trays-my-cab.html
I drain my overflow trays siphon style with an aquarium hose,a clothes pin,and a bucket that I also spit into when I get some run off in my mouth....BLAH! (more mental than actual taste). My outdoor plants/shrubs love the run off and my phlem.
