I like to use a clear beer cup inside a taped up red one to block the light. Then you can pull the clear one out to check the root development. If the clear cups get too much light though, the roots will turn green and turn into stems. I also use a 50/50 soil/perlite in the beer cups for starting the seeds / rooted clones / early veg, with a layer of all perlite at the bottom and a little more soil towards the top, then transplant or 'BOGplant' into or onto 100% perlite tubs or buckets.
I do the same thing with the tape but I use foil tape since it reflects more light and therefore heat than gorrila tape and hopefully keeps your bucket and rez cooler. It is more expensive though... but by having a sperate taped up cup for blocking the light, and the clear one getting destroyed at transplant time, you don't have to keep retaping.
I did hempys for a long time, trying my first run at 100% coco in smartpots right now and it's going ok, but not as quick of growth as in 100% perlite hempys!
