they were a week old before my lazy ass got round to sorting a proper cover out for the tray lol, there was a little green in with the roots and when i swapped and cleaned the tray there was a bit slime on the bottom but 10 days or so on and they dont seem affected by my lazy antics and in the coming days i intend to sort out the problem of the small gap around the bottles, how i dont know yet lol

No those were one gallon bottles they hold about 3/4 gallons of medium now that I cut the top off. And I have a 250w hps with 7 23w Cfls up over two plants I couldn't fit under the hps. But it is all Hempy!

The problem with using "all" hydroton is that it cannot wick water to the surface by itself. Perlite is used because it is very good at wicking water upwards. The vermiculite will retain water, so that aids in keeping a nutrient enriched moist environment for roots.

As for trying all hydroton, I have not. My guess is you'd need to water every day. Maybe even multiple times a day or an automatic irrigation system.

All perlite will work. I haven't used the verm in a long time. But I do put a soil cap on my buckets. It's a great base for surface roots, keeps the perlite from trying to float, keeps the light off the perlite and is a great moisture meter. A layer of Hydroton on top of the perlite will do the same, except for moisture indicator.

I've seen straight hydroton used, but as you noted you will have to water at least daily until the roots hit the rez.

I'm loving this Hempy stuff. I've completed 3 grows, all in soil FFOF. My next grow is definitely going to be Hempy. I've read a lot about Osmocote CRF with Hempy and how great the results are, but I really want to grow organically. I found DYNAMITE ORGANIC CRF that seems to work the same way Osmocote does. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, has anyone found or tried growing Hempy style in grow bags? I can't seem to find any bags that don't have holes. But if they're out there, it would be an extremely cost effective alternative to pots/buckets. Keep up the good work everybody.

guys i need help again. ph is 5.5 light nutes. idk whats wrong. leaves keep getting yellowish. and brown starts from outside of leave and moves in. it cant be a phos def. cuz theres alot in my grow nutes. and cal mag cant be it cuz i feed with molasses to feed the beneficials. so idk whats wrong.

last one is of one that has the claw. might be underwatering since i hadnt watered in 2 days. but idk but the rest.

Smooth what are you feeding for nutrients? Whats the EC/ppm of the solution? Are those in just perlite or in soil with lots of perlite? While 5.5 is ok for hempy/hydro i personally try to hit about 5.9-6 most feedings 5.5 is the bottom end of what accepted as a good range. Since its hard to know what kind of ph swing is going on inside a hempy as compared to a tub of water maybe try upping your pH. I am colorblind so im not much help with leaf color...i can tell when it turns yellow..lol which is too late. To me it almost looks like zinc deficiency or phos but most quality nutes will supply as much as is needed unless you are underfeeding....but DONT just feed them heavy just yet. Put up your info and lets let some real pros help.

i feed them half strength nutes at around 950 ppm. thats with a ppm of 200 something from tapwater. everyday u come in and see more dead and brown and yellow leaves. before when i had them in cups, i barely saw any dead leaves. i have them in perlite/verm mix 3 to 1. i had perlite on bottom 1/4 and had a 3 to 1 mix of perlite to verm mix from there to the top. they are 43 days in veg already and still tiny like that. should they be big bushes by now? the brown leaves are on the bottom mostly.

and i noticed how my leaves are so small compared to other peoples leaves by now. reason i did 5.5 is because when i had my dry out a few weeks ago. i was told to put my ph to 5.0-5.3 range to dissolve the salts in my medium. so i been doing a low ph lvl. maybe i should keep it at 5.8 from now on .

I use to think the same way as you. When I ran a dwc for my first grow, I would always see the ph swing up in veg and down in flower. It wasn't till Dalek mentioned it that it stuck. If you look at the PH chart for nutrient uptake, riding a ph of 6 is ideal. If you want, you could run 5.9 in veg just to play it safe.

I would suggest you give them a nice flush with PH 6.0 water. Then the next feeding, give them 1/2 strength and watch growth.
