Worried about Seedlings in Rockwool Cubes, Previous Seedlings Died from Damping Off

(originally 3 posts, condensed into one when the seedlings died, thought it might be useful to keep around for people fighting pythium in seedlings)

Hi, I was wondering if someone might be able to point me on the right path with my seedlings.
I have 3 Nirvana Misty seedlings in rockwool cubes at the moment with each under a CFL about 2-3" away. The seedlings germinated using paper towel/plate method and were put into the rockwool cube holes when their taproots were a little over a centimeter long. This was 3 days ago and I'm worried the seedlings aren't going to make it.

I had 7 seedlings die on me in under 24 hours in another grow environment ( a cabinet I'm going to be throwing out). The cabinet had been in a basement flood and the seedlings died of damping off/mold, classic symptoms of it, stem turning purple/dark and falling over. The only bit of equipment I'm using from this old cabinet in the new grow (CFLs in a closet) are the CFLs themselves, the entire inside of the new closet has been washed down with rubbing alcohol/soap/water and plastic sheeting put up.

I'm very concerned about my babies dying because they're the last of my order. I bought 10 seeds from nirvana and once these are done that's it, I don't have enough $$ to order new seeds any time soon. I don't want to be overworried about them though, because then I might do something dumb and kill the buggers...:wall:.

So, if they germinated on day 0, and were put into the rockwool cubes on day 1 (took about a day for the taproots to grow 1cm) and here we are on day 4 total. Two of the seedlings haven't pushed above the surface yet, the tops of the seeds are still at the level of the rockwool cube, but I assume (hope) the taproot is growing? The other seedling has pushed up some and the husk is coming undone, but something seems wrong, the stem isn't bright green, and I'm worried it has damping off too, and will kill the others. I even sprinkled ground cinnamon on the tops of the rockwool cubes as this is supposed to have a powerful anti-fungal effect against damping off.

I don't have a camera to take pictures, too broke.

Do I have something to worry about or should I just chill? Heh...chillin' is easier said than done when you've just watched 7 plants of your medicine die.

anybody please help. The cubes are pretty much dry at the moment, with each sitting under a CFL at a distance of about 2 or 3" with a small oscillating fan in the closet moving air around. RH is a little over 60, temp is high 60s, low 70s.

The germinated seeds were popped into the hole in the rockwool cube with the taproot down and the seed hull facing up. The hull on two of the three plants has not pushed above the surface of the hole in the rockwool for 2 days, should I consider these seedlings dead? I pulled some of the rockwool apart very briefly and saw a still white taproot that looked as if it had grown.

The last germinated seed has pushed up above the hole and I can see its green leaves getting ready to unfurl and push the hull off, however, I can also see that the stem has darkened, and its not standing up straight (not on its side either), what should I do with this one? I'm hoping it doesn't have damping off, but I don't want it to dry out either. If I don't spray the cubes, I risk the seedlings drying out and dying, if I spray the cubes, I increase the change of damping off.

Well, all 3 of the seedlings are dead, from pythium/damping off.
My guess is that since the rockwool cubes they were planted in were in the vicinity of the original pythium infection, they served as the infection vector and killed the seedlings.

They were put right into the gaping maw of death -_-.

Dammit all....

So slight change in topic.
What can I do to sterilize/kill the pythium infections on my equipment? I have a few bottles of nutrients in the infected area and that's about it.

Definitely buying new rockwool cubes though.

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with my last good plant. I have one Misty plant that germinated and started growing way before any of these. It's got about 8 sets of fan leaves and looks pretty happy. It got a little bit nute burned early on in its life but all new growth is happy dark green so I'm guessing it's ok. (Any leaves that were over 50% burned fell off). My question is if there's any way I can tell if this larger plant has been infected by pythium without taking it out of its soil to inspect the roots. If anyone has experience fighting a pythium infestation (and especially good techniques for germinating seedlings/getting seedlings to thrive) when pythium is known to be around.
I put it this way because as far as I can tell it's somewhere in my house. My basement floods so that's most likely the source but these new seedlings got plagued two floors up, so I know that to a certain extent, it's everywhere. Besides sterilizing my current equipment and trying to keep things dryer next time, what should I do to fight pythium?

i have never had to deal with that problem and i am fairly new to this but maybe jut try to keep it a lil more contained at first with prehaps a humidity done and use a heat pad under it to help speed up the process to help you get to stronger part of veg growth where they may combat this a bit beeter i just started a tray of seedlings and all 40 of 40 germanated i aswell use the rockwool methed right after the paper towel but that dome and heat pad give me great germanating results

Are your RW cubes the small ones? If so, they should weigh 20 grams wet. Water them with a digi scale and a spray bottle if you want to be sure.

I agree with the humidity dome and heating mat. Four of my seedlings are in rockwool cubes and the girls (God Bud Fem.) look happy under florescent light 18/6 with the heat mat set at 72 degrees. Two others are just bag seeds that I got going about 1 week before the girls. They are in rockwool cubes but now in a net pot with Hydrorock, getting ready to put them in a Aero 9 in about a week. The
bag seeds are testers for the GB girls.

This is my first attempt at Aero growing, so far so good. I keep the grow area as clean as possible.

Damping off? Give us an update on how your doing.

Hang in there.

Just had my own run-in with pythium, first grow using GH waterfarm. Think the cube was getting sprayed too often with the nute solution. It's a sad day when you have to pull a plant.IMAG0354.jpgIMAG0357.jpg IMAG0359.jpg
