would it be dangerous to have 2 hps bulbs side by side 2 inchs apart?

It wouldnt be dangerous but why would you need then 2 inchs apart? Depending on the grow style and wattage
theres no need even for 150w hps more like 6inchs
 
If your trying to save space you will bebetter off just using a bigger light ( 600 - 1000).

Will be a waste of light if put right next to each other
 
Why on earth would anybody want to keep thier lights close together? In effect you would be presenting a single light source. By splitting the lights apart you will probably get at least 4X the amount of light energy! Not to mention that multiple light sources help eliminate shadows and help penetration.

The increased light energy comes from the shorter distance the light has to travel to reach the plant. It's the "Inverse Square Law", check it out!
 
a bit like squeezing the headlights on a car together in to the centre of the car like a motorcycle what benefit would that have except for maybe if you wanted to follow the white line on the road on a very dark night lol.
you would have to do that because you would not see the side of the fucking road as you should.

it is a waste if you ever have a lamp lighting and heating another bulb, better to focus that energy on the canopy. also you will have to replace the bulbs more often and increase the risk of a fiery explosion
