Would these inline duct fans work?

I'm thinking about using these http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100396559
for a 4'x4'x6.5' tent space. I was thinking 3 or 4 of them. One for intake, one for exhaust, and the other 1 or 2 to cool a 400 or 600 watt HPS.

My question is are these fans worth a shit? All the inline fans in hydro shops are pretty expensive. Is this just hydro shop mark up or is there a reason they charge so much more?

They are pretty crappy dude. I bought two and i wish i had just waited and save more money for the better ones. When the say 250 cfms they really mean like 75 cfms. Thats just my opinion

never used them but they look like they could be beaten by a pc fan there tiny. might work on a cfl grow... you would prob be better off with a bathroom extractor

got in my 4" fan last night POS dont do it save up or just spend right and get a quality fan

Weedcraft - I got the 8" model, supposed to be like 500cfm or something? It was a waste of my money. They are a duct BOOSTER fan. That means it only boosts the air from your a/c or heating, it is VERY WEAK for using to exhaust air. The ones at hydro shops are more expensive because they are better! In my opinion, if you only need a small fan like that I would go with an S&P mixvent TD 100, 100x, 125, or 150 tops. I have the 100 and 200 model(as all of RIU probably knows by now haha). They are quiet fans, and they MOVE some AIR! Good luck with picking a fan out. I know those may seem somewhat expensive, but when you do get it, you will be VERY glad you did! I sure am! The money I wasted on the 8" duct booster would have paid for half of the TD-100! Save a little money and do it right the first time! I've wasted a few hundred $ myself. Good luck, stay safe, PEACE!

CFM ratings tell only one side of a story. The reason fans in hydro shops cost so much more is the fact that they have a much better static pressure rating, even when the CFM rating is similar. This is because they are designed to pull air through a carbon filter, as well as being suited to longer ducting runs.

If you aren't using a CF, and don't have much ducting, the "duct booster" fans will be adequate (barely). However, if you have more than a couple of bends in your duct, and/or use a filter, I would definately advise something more suited to the task.

Not to be rude, but I think it's annoying to MANY posters at RIU to give advice if you haven't even bothered to read the VERY FIRST POST of the thread, let alone at least reading a COUPLE of pages before you start advising. I'm sorry if I'm coming off rude or anything of the nature..it just seems that many threads have a lot of junk in them from people not reading the post, then people argue, etc etc.

He asked if those fans were worth a shit. I told him what they were and weren't capable of doing, and did so without being an ass in any way.

And yes, you are coming off as being quite rude. What part of my post did you find to be "junk", in particular?

Thanks for all the replies guys. They were all a huge help and direct answer to what I needed to know. I'll be sure to invest in the quality to cool the flowering tent. But I may use a cheaper one in my CFL clone box.

My htg grow bright in line duct fan works great for me with the diy filter. Im in a 2x3x3h box, its says 80cfm, more like 60, but works for me

I am using one of those fans (the 6" model) to keep my 4x4x7 grow tent cool. It works great for me. It was on sale at Home D last month for $22 and they also had a thermostat fan control on sale for about the same price. Bottom line: for under $50 I can keep the temps in my tent under control. As the other posters pointed out, it is not the highest quality and I doubt it would be effective for filtering; but for cooling my space it's perfect.

I have a 400W light in my hut and the fan is piped to the light's exhaust.

i paid reg price for the 4" fan just over 24 bucks ,i shouldnt say its a POS because it is well built and does what it was designed to do boost air flow in the duct im looking at adding a second 400w light so i will be needing a pos. cfm fan to force air through the 4" is just barely keeping up good to hear its just right for y;our app...... good growing

I went ahead and got a nice one. 250 cfm i believe, but this thing is pretty strong. Should be able to use a carbon filter with it also.

Got it at my local hydro shop $99. It's actually 265 cfm. Looks like this.

What I did, was connect a 6" inline from home depot to each side of my 400w HPS. It allowed for pretty good airflow, and allowed for the plants to be less than 5" away from the glass. They whine a bit when they are on, but they seem to do that job. I went for them because they were much cheaper than a commercial inline fan, and i figured they would be quieter too. I am sure that the fans will not last long pushing hot air like they are, but they serve my purposes well.
