Would this type of transplant work?

Getting back into growing after several years off. I've got about a dozen or so personal sized grows under my belt but I'm far from a guru grower.

This grow I plan to use small 1.5 gallon trashcans for my second transplant. My space is 4'8"L x 2'W. I have plenty of vertical space. I have a 4' 8 bulb T5 hanging above (400W/40000 Lumens) and a 2' 8 bulb T5 on each side wall (220W/20000 lumens ea.). Below is a pic of the can. I found them at the dollar store for a buck each. I figure I can easily fit 14 of these in my space to veg out and if I'm lucky allow me to keep as many as 10 to full flower. I know that's a lot of plants in that space, but I'm an LST madman and I've always been a fan of many smaller plants then trying to grow only a few monster trees.

I've never tried this but I read that roots would rather have more vertical space when transplanting than horizontal. Since I have plenty of vertical room, I was thinking that for my final transplant I could put the plant into a can with the bottom cut off and then partially down inside another can with fresh soil. I figure I could take the growing room capacity to around 2.5 gallons which while not perfectly ideal, would give me the 3' final plant height I'm shooting for.

Here's the can. It measures approx 10" x 8" at the top and is about 12" tall:

Here's how I'm thinking of doing the final transplant:

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Looks like it would work to me. May want to tape the outside of the buckets if they're slightly translucent. Nice T5 setup, I've also got a T5 setup (link in signature) for veg and bloom.
