Pardon the reference to growing on a cannabis forum..
felt like I could share my opinion on the subject.
I always urge newer growers to do a post harvest rootball inspection, think of it like an autopsy
those things will teach you a lot about what the plant likes or doesn't
the reason you may want to consider transplanting more often is because cannabis is a drought tolerant plant, the roots will shoot down to the bottom of the container first, sorta like establishing a "irrigation" system first.
So when you transplant into a large container, from lets say, a clone, then the roots system will be less "dense" than a plant that has been transplanted from a medium size container, reason being the roots will create "layers" so to speak.
it's also a crucial time to apply mychorrizhae on the roots, remember the uptake of phosphorus is HUGELY predicated on your myco populations
Granted over time, especially outdoors, the whole container will fill with roots, but in an indoor grow, you will get a more dense rootball if you transplant at least one time prior to going into it's final container. I trans twice, from clone to quart size, to 4 or 5 gals
in my opinion.. but I base this on many yrs, and over a thousand plants.
One thing to consider, if your transplanting technique is poor, you may be better off just keeping it in it's final container.
But after a lil while you'll be good enough at transplanting that you won't shock them even for a day.
