No zoom needed this way. Under HID lighting the pic will strobe kinda.
You wanna snap the shot either on the down stroke of the pulse of the light or at the beginning of the upstroke of the pulse. Play with it using this setting without zooming in, just get closer to the plant. Also you can always sit it on the kitchen counter with regular lighting too. Turn off the flash if under HID as well.
Your camera is almost identical to mine but yours is a newer model. It's got the scroll wheel on top, mine doesn't. So I know it's more than capable to take good pics.
I leave auto focus on and everything else like exposure default as well. I've played with the diffrent lighting setting but have found just snapping away and picking thru later has been best. 20 mins a day playing with taking plant pics and you'll be taking as good if not better pics than me. I upload mine to P bucket and use the 17" monitor resize to post for the forums here.
