WW seeds... sprouting from soil?

So I got my seeds today.. And am wondering if its ok to put them in a humidity dome with soil.. last time I sprouted 5 seeds the paper towel method and only 2 survived. This time I just want to place the seeds in a 1 inch pot with FF soil and place it in a humidity dome under a 25 watt T5.

So my questions are:

1 how long will it take to sprout from soil?
2.would the T5 24 watt be a problem?
3.How humid should the dome be? how hot should the dome be? I've read it should stay at 80 degrees for the seed to sprout?

Honestly if you use the paper towel method and make sure the temp is in the 70's you should be fine. If you must use the dome it can take anywhere from 2-14 days to sprout. 50-60% humidity should do it. Please make sure your medium stays warm. 80 degrees will be fine. Your light is fine.

Also, Ed Rosenthal says this is him favorite way to germinate. Drop seeds 1/4 inch and let nature do the rest.

Thanks for responding Dunlarkin! Thats.. exactly what I did, I dropped the seeds in a very small pot, I would say an inch and a half with FF soil.. I have the seeds under a 600 watt MH bulb at 74 to 79 degrees.. am wondering if I should just but the pots outside since the weather is very sunny at 80 degrees.

simple.
get a sterile medium that holds some water like vermiculite, coco, peat etc or a seed starting mix or jiffy pellets (peat pots).
soak with water and squeeze until no water runoff when you lift the pot \ pellet \ whatever. thats not much squeezing.
put seed on top.
sprinkle a tiny bit of the medium on top, just to hide it from the light.
wait 1-7 days for the seed to sprout, adding water as needed with a SPRAYER.

when seeds pop get a small light (like a CFL) over them for 3-4 days and a humidity dome on top.
then you should start GRADUALY increasing the light intensity.
with a 600W MH you should start at 4 feet away, each way lowering it a feet until it reaches 1 feet away.


When they pop a root outside of the container check if they need transplanting.


if you chose to follow someones method on this subject go with ALL he says, don't mix methods.

This sounds like something I want to try next time.. can you post links of the materials you mention on the above post. Am not familiar with sterile mediums, coco, peat seed starting mix or jiffy pellets.. I know I sound clueless But I rather know the materials I need so when I go to the hydro store they wont sell/push me another direction. Thanks!

just google them.
vermiculite, coco and peat moss have their spot in wikipedia.
jiffy pellets are all around the web, those are compressed tabs of peat. (there are coco versions as well)
seed starting soil is a soil mix that is ment for seedlings. usually if a bag carries that name it should be just fine for doing it.

Can't really tell as of yet. It's been a week, could be the seed sprouted but hasn't surfaced, hopefully I'll see some leaves soon, kinda worried. I didn't use the jiffy pallets, I have no patience couldn't wait for the jiffy's to get in the mail so I used FF soil.
