Xbox 360 fans grow box mod?

hey all I'm starting a little cfl grow 15"/17.5"/24", just wondering if the fans off my red ringed box will work for a intake/outtake and if so how I could wire that shit to be able to plug it in. thanks

It works for me. Go to radio shack or walmart and buy a universal ac adapter and directly wire it in until it turns on (You know, plug the wires in one hole and the other and reverse them if it doesnt turn on and it should) and you can adjust the speed too with the adapter. But if you're talking about making one fan work one direction and the other fan the opposite i dont think you can, but you can pick up another fan at radioshack too and wire it up to a separate adapter.

alright thanks man ya i went to walmart and furture shop last week and no one knew what i was talking about, im thinking of just going to home depot or something but ya no I know the fans go one way i just figured might as well get one of my fans for as cheap as possible and my electrician brother wont help out with the wiring so trying to keep it simple. thanks

Ya well i didnt have a warranty so i let my friend have a go at it and he ended up scratching the hell out of my mother board and now its a write off, would computer fans just need this adapter too or are they easier?

From what i remember of opening my 360 they are the same connections as a regular computer fan. Its just that regular computer fans come in bigger 120mm sizes and IMO would be easier to fix to the wall of a grow box. TBH if your 360 is a write off then its not a bad idea and could defiantly work. Good recycling :D

LOL I used the 360 fans for my first box. They were ok but my box was pretty small. They're a little noisy too. That's how I got caught, lol...

Just get a phone charger you dont need and cut it halfway.. cut the wire of the xbox fan and strip the wires.. just work out which ones connect to what.. and yes they can be very loud if you connect them to your computer!

Did you already take the fans out? If so there should be 4 wires, two from each fan. One positive and one negative (per fan). You will have to strip the wires so that the ends are exposed. Then get an AC adapter (120V AC to 12V DC). If you are going to use a cell phone charger make sure the output is DC. I rarely see cell phone chargers put out more than 3V. It will still work but the fans won't be spinning at full speed. Then strip the end off of the adapter and there should be two wires. Then you just have to figure out which is positive and negative. Plug it in and touch the wires of the adapter to 2 wires of 1 fan to determine +/-. Usually red is + and black is - but you never know so might as well test it before you make any solid connections. If you touched the correct wires the fan will work. If you were wrong it won't do anything. If you get this far then connect the 2 + wires from each fan together and attatch those to the + wire from the adapter. Then do the same for the - wires. Then you're good to go!

alright ya i got them out but ive tried a few places and haven't been able to find a a/c adaptor so any other tips on where to find one (canada)? and just any ideas on cheap ways to vent

If the xbox fan puts out sufficient cfms to cool for the wattage you have going into your box then I say go for it. If it doesn't work well enough you can always pick up a better computer fan for under $5. Personally if I can rig something up from things I have laying around then I always go for it.
