My plants are two weeks old, made big mistake on using miracle grow+sand. I think its nutrient burn but im not sure. im using cfls about 3-4 in away from plants. temps very from 60-75F, watering every two to three days. i know the color is not great its my camera, but the plant started fine then began to become pale green and curl, then yellow browning leaves. finally a couple days ago the bottom two leaves fell off. wtf is going on? plz help. any help on this is much appreciated.

Whats your PH of your runoff... ??

Miracle grow soil yes...? Are there any time release pellets of nutrients in there... ??

Hopefully you are not giving it any nutrients yet... ??

Last i checked the Ph was a couple of weeks ago, it was hard to tell cause the ph testing strips i bought are crap, i believe it is normal. and are the pellets those little white balls things in the soil? and no nutrients from me yet there are way too small yet. but since they are going through a lot of stress they are stunted, the planted are 2 weeks old. the leaves dropping is not an isolated incident, it is happening to all five plants in varying amounts.:-?

How much are you watering each time? They maybe overwatered, that looks like a fairly big pot. If you are watering every 2-3 days the soil will not be dry down by the roots. Stick your finger into the soil about 1 1/2 inches to see if it's dry enough to water again. Ph is very important and it almost wiped my plants out. Don't sit and watch your plant you'll just drive yourself crazy. Here are some pic's of what mine went through. As bad as they look, I didn't loose any of them. I kept water in check and went easy on the nutes after I figured out what was going on with the ph... Hope it puts your mind at ease..... The last pic is a male that I killed 3 days ago. It was topped 3 times and is 24" wide and 20" tall. So be patient...

actually the "fairly big pot" your talking about is a small foam cup. lol:mrgreen: anyway i plan on transplanting soon to an actual pot or whatever i can recycle, like some 2-liters.

Hey I had some seedlings that looked like that on my first attempt. I had fed them too soon - rookie move and they were too cold and over watered. i thought for sure they were dead. I decided at a last attempt to save them to transplant them in to a bigger container and new good dirt and they took off right away. I hope this helps.

will dirt from a backyard garden be ok, i don't have any "good" soil at the moment. if i dig up some dirt i'll flush it first.

You know I am not a pro. I want to say it is not a good idea to bring the outside dirt in because I believe it can cause problems, bugs, etc. since it is not sterile. But again, I am a newbie. If you can get a bag of potting soil that would be good. If outside dirt is all you have, you might search for postings on it to see if there are any words of wisdom regarding using outside dirt. Hopefully someone else will put there 2 cents in to help you. Good Luck!!!

I'm using outside soil and they are growing nice. i live in socal and my soil is pretty clayish. but they arent yellow or burned or anything.
but i wouldnt suggest on planting in sand... there is usually too much sodium.
my 2 cents. =]

well i live WNY so there shouldn't be many active insects in the soil as they are probably frozen. ill probably need to rinse it with warm water to thaw it:mrgreen:

go ahead and use it. i would first bake it in the oven at about 350 for 20 min, keeping an eye on in order to prevent burning up the organic matter. that will kill any insects, disease or fungus. if there are bugs where you live (which there isnt a habitat in the world that doesnt have insects, or some member of that family) belive me they are able to survive the winter. they have adaptations that allow them to "overwinter" you better bake or microwave your soil to sterilize it or you will have problems with disease, insects, and or fungus. Also add vermiculite, perlite, sand, or some small rocks for added drainage and moisture retention. Anything you dont buy in a bag i.e. get it from your yard you need to sterilize it, even some things you buy in a bag comes with pests. Yes MG does have gnats! An advantage of using soil from the outdoors is, it contains calcium (parent material is rocks), some potting soils dont contain calcium, just shredded up organic matter. plants need calcium in very small ammounts for growth.

well thanks everyone for your opinions, i have concluded myself that the soil is probably nitrogen deficient. any ideas for around the house quick sources of usable nitrogen? no i am not going to piss on my plants. lol peace:peace:

You can search and do research into it here; I already did though: Miracle Grow kills seedlings. You need rockwool or organic MG to start it; seedlings don't grow in MG and if they do it screws them up bad.

There is a note about it at like the third comment in my grow journal.
