yet another led thread, downsizing from 600 hps

Hi folks, im new here. I have a 600w hps and a 4x4 tent but am looking to downsize for stealth, noise, space and power consumption issues. Also, 600w is way overkill for the amount I actually get through.

I have spent the past week reading about LED lights and it has just left me more confused than ever.

The new setup will preferably be a 2.5 x 2.5 foot area (6.25square foot altogether) with up to 7 foot of vertical space available. This seems useful for LED as they seem to require a bit of hanging distance from plants anyway.

I had been looking at the mars 2 units, then I read that COB leds are far superior, then I also read that most of the expensive LED units are rebranded ones off the likes of aliexpress etc. I also hear that actual watts power used still isnt an accurate indicator of what yield a light will give due to different types of led used and efficiency etc.

I saw this light http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Absolute-12-band-Full-Spectrum-LED-Grow-Light-with-CREE-COB-2016/32525994741.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_1,searchweb201644_2_505_506_503_504_502_10001_10002_10016_10017_10010_10005_10011_10006_10003_10004_10009_10008,searchweb201560_3,searchweb1451318400_-1,searchweb1451318411_6450&btsid=f4d15eef-e372-4a84-a39a-7e6d3cec273c

which appears to be a COB unit and draws 210 actual watts.

I also saw this light http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Wholesale-cob-300w-led-grow-light-full-spectrum-led-grow-lights-for-hydroponic-growing-systems/32565958005.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_1,searchweb201644_2_505_506_503_504_502_10001_10002_10016_10017_10010_10005_10011_10006_10003_10004_10009_10008,searchweb201560_3,searchweb1451318400_-1,searchweb1451318411_6450&btsid=f4d15eef-e372-4a84-a39a-7e6d3cec273c

which is quite a bit cheaper but much higher power draw with actual 360w.

Also this one with an actual power of 240w and cob chips. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/200W-Ful-COB-Led-Grow-Lights-Spectrum-2015-Best-for-Hydroponics-COB-Led-Plant-Grow-Light/32433353869.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_1,searchweb201644_2_505_506_503_504_502_10001_10002_10016_10017_10010_10005_10011_10006_10003_10004_10009_10008,searchweb201560_3,searchweb1451318400_-1,searchweb1451318411_6450&btsid=f86f7586-ba54-4215-af18-ed04ebba5d5b

There is also the likes of this, I have seen these lenses on some higher end grow lights and I think the actual watts is around 200. Im used to seeing pink/purple light though and not the white this one is putting out. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/300W-COB-LED-grow-light-1000W-HPS-Professional-in-flowering-More-condenser-More-light-More-energy/1416725518.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_1,searchweb201644_2_505_506_503_504_502_10001_10002_10016_10017_10010_10005_10011_10006_10003_10004_10009_10008,searchweb201560_3,searchweb1451318400_-1,searchweb1451318411_6450&btsid=edc98b73-5c8b-411c-a8bf-e1ee552d1afa

I would prefer to be using 300w or less of power in this 6.25sq foot if possible without compromising on yield or quality and to make the power saving worthwhile. The 360w led unit I may as well be running a 400hps.

Lastly going the DIY route is out of the question, it will have to be a premade unit.

Could you please let me know if I am on the right or wrong track, and what sort of power draw and LED type I should be looking at for the space available or if any of the lights linked above are likely candidates? Thanks folks

Hi there are several brands of pro built cob units on the market. The one you linked has a cob and diodes.
Pacific Light Concepts
Tasty Led and many others are here and they will answer any question.
Good luck, and I would stick with(WHITE) COB led only not colored leds

I would not buy any of those lights. I would check out a51s w90s for a 2.5x2.5 space. If it's closed you might be alright but I think the specs only cover 20x20 for flowering. Could get 2. Would run you about $400. That's about the cheapest option for high quality cobs I think.

I forgot to add, it has to be something that is available in the uk.

so stick to white COBs. Do you think 200w would be sufficient or should I be looking closer to the 300w mark?

200 watts should be more than enough for a 2.5x2.5

Someone posted a cob company in the UK, can't remember the brand. Anyone remember that thread? The case was chrome, looked like the grill of a truck.

International shipping is nuts for small fries like me.

I'm working on getting a DHL account, will know how rates compare to Fed-ex in a day or so.

Really i think you need to get a hold of a international broker and find out always good to get the upper hand ,, i know i had 8000 pounds shipped internationally it cost me 180 bucks we used warranty replacement i guess warranty parts or what ever has its benifits crossing borders

PS Fri my Cobs are in fucker look out lol

Fed-Ex only has two options, and both are obviously air freight, 2-3 days for premium, 3-5 days for economy. That's from East Coast US to New Zealand. 70 lbs, 900 dollars for economy. I think DHL can do better.

I think you're right that better options are out there, but that quote was for Fed-Ex International Economy. 70 lb. box 18x18x40", which was a good bit cheaper than 4 9x9x40" boxes totaling 70 lbs.

I did a bit more reading and looked at videos by growmau5 on youtube and think I should be able to manage a DIY effort using 4 cob LEDs. For anyone thats using them what sort of distance from the plants is required? And what sort of spread will 1 cob led give at this distance? If I know those 2 then I will know what the optimum spacing between each LED will be to maximise coverage. Is there any merit to adding a few far red LEds to help with flowering as well? or do these need to go on just for a short time at lights off to work? Thanks
