Here are the modifications I made to my light/hood. I got a 3.5" hole saw and cut a hole in the end of the hood where the ventilation slits used to be. I also bought a piece of polycarbonate sheeting and cut it to size. I glued it to the light using silicone glue and left about an inch of space near the base of the light for air intake.
The next day after the glue had a chance to dry I reinstalled it into the tent and attached my 4" ventilation tubing directly to the hood over the 3.5" hole I cut. In essence, this works as a sort of cool tube. The polycarbonate mitigates much of the heat, and cool air is drawn across the bulb and out the top of the tent through the carbon filter. This change cut the tent's stabilization temperatures by 5-7 degrees Fahrenheit. Now instead of ~90F, it stays at a very manageable 85F or below at plant level.
In that picture, you can see I also finished up my reservoir (mostly). I used silicone glue to mount air stones to the bottom, and I installed a water pump with suction cups. I also tied a bit of panty-hose around the water pump so roots don't get caught in the impeller. This should make flushing nutes much easier. The reservoir itself holds about 10 liters when it is filled optimally.
Hey! Why does that picture look weird?!? I'll tell you! It's physics! Oh man, I got super excited when I saw this. When I installed the polycarbonate over my light, I didn't realize it at the time but the light coming through it is refracted and therefore polarized. This polarization creates a neat horizontal interference pattern when you use a polarized lens to look at it, such as the lens on my phone's camera. Weee!
Currently there is one Easy Ryder seedling and one LSD seedling in the tent. I haven't included any pictures of those yet because the lid of my reservoir in which these seedlings' net pots are mounted is seriously wonky. I made the mistake of accidentally cutting 2" holes instead of 3" holes for my net pots, and then when I tried to cut 3" holes my drill started flying all over the place and I almost cut off my foot (kidding, no blood was spilled) and the lid that I had worked so hard to cover with duct tape and panda film was pretty messed up. Anyway, I'll get another identical container and re-make the lid soon without failing quite so much. I'll need a similar sized container to pump my reservoir into when I do my flushes anyway!
That's all for tonight, folks. The little seedlings in the tent are looking pretty good. The LSD is doing great (it went from seed to sprout in about 2 days in a rapid rooter plug on a heat mat set at 84F). The Easy Ryder may have gone a bit too long without being transplanted into a reservoir, so I'm not too sure about it. We'll see. It wouldn't be the end of the world if it doesn't pull through, but I'd like to see how it goes with multiple plants in the tent.
See ya'll later!
Oh, P.S. I finally got around to installing the carbon filters on my PC case yesterday. My girlfriend and I walked into my room today after being gone for the night and couldn't smell a thing from the PC! It had been getting pretty stinky hopping into flower, so I'm glad they work well. I'll take a picture of them soon too so you can see how they look on the case.
