we have a lot of chain pickerel around where i am, and if i'm using treble hooks, which most crank baits have, it can be a real pita to get all of the hooks out of them, even thwith pliers some times.. some times, if i know there's going to be a lot of pickerel, i'll just cut one of the treble's off so there's only two per, makes life much easier.. :D
I was about to say to do jist that then i saw the rest of your post lol. cutting the one that would be the "front of the fish" on each hook also helps it from getting stuck in the weeds!:bigjoint:

Well avoid contaminating your lure/line with unpleasent smells. Perfume, cigs, etc.
Smallest peice of weed on a lure will discourage a fish

Do you know any good knots? Eagle claw is a good, fairly easy knot.
Are you fishing with the kids?
BIg lake small lake?
Targeting certain fish or just looking for excitement?

Morning and afternoon are generally best time to fish. Cat of curious already mentioned barometric pressure and how it affects fishing. Atmospheric pressure/weather and moon cycle can all play a part on when the fish are biting the most.

I recommend waking up early enough to get on the water with the sunrise. Hard to beat a good cup of coffee on the water, with the sunrise.
Also get everything ready the night before for morning trips. Nothing worse then waking up early to realise you're not prepared.
Are you good with handling fish?

As far as giving the dogs the guts... I guess if they want them. (probably won't)
Quick google search brings up "acute renal failure after ingesting fish gull bladder"
Just use the guts for fertilizer.

i usually do better with live bait, but i always feel like i'm cheating, so i use artificials..
If you found a way to cheat at fishing, do tell!
also hand wipes
What for the fish slime and worm poop? You're suppose to rub that on your chest and make grunting noises.

Serious though I just wash my hands in the water, no chemical smells.

Well a little crystal meth and a stick of dynamite might prove to be a better fishing experience

Or just some weed a pole no license fuck the feds

Some night crawlers a gutting knife a pole net and food obviously

Fishing will end up be boring as fuck

Liquor might also be a good option

And yeah thats about it

I only fish when I'm drunker than a skunk in a trunk

If ya got any outdoors questions like hunting or fishing then P.M. me

This is what I found online about the area i'd be fishing in...Channel Catfish - Good: Catfish are in prespawn mode and are biting well. Try on the rock reefs, shoreline rocks or just try on the windward shorelines with some cut bait, worms, or stink bait. White Bass - Slow: An occasional white bass catch near the island, Dodge's Point, or near the Ventura Grade. Largemouth Bass - Slow: An occasional largemouth near the edges of the reeds. Crappie - Fair: Crappie bite has slowed down inside the reeds but anglers may have success on the edges at sunset. Walleye - Good: Walleyes are biting well. Billy's Reef and Gilmore's have been producing. Docks near the outlet on the south shore, city beach are also still picking up some walleyes. Dodge's Point seems to be consistent. Boat anglers are doing best trolling crankbaits or fishing live bait rigs with leaches. Muskellunge - Good: Anglers are having success near the island or rock reefs near the areas that yellow bass are spawning. Incidental catches from walleye anglers trolling crankbaits. Yellow Bass - Good: Anglers are still doing ok on numbers. Yellows are biting well near the island, Dodge's Point. Some can also be caught on the edges of reeds and near docks. Average size is around 7.5 inches. Use a 1/32 ounce jig on a slow retrieve. It's optional to tip it with a minnow or small piece of worm. Best bite is before sunrise to about 8 a.m.

I know lots of good knots! I was a girl scout :) I will be fishing with my boys. Girls are too young to sit still that long. Big lake. Just looking for some quality mommy-son time. Once they go to grandma's for a few weeks I might go alone just to try it out by myself.

Have a depth finder and trolling motor?

Don't do much catfishin but they hunt by smell. Take the bait right off floor bottom. Sit and wait kinda deal. Catfish hook and a weight.

White Bass - Slow: An occasional white bass catch near the island, Dodge's Point, or near the Ventura Grade. Largemouth Bass - Slow: An occasional largemouth near the edges of the reeds.
Bass slow, but you can always practice casting into reeds/weed beds with a hula popper or other floating crank bait. experiment with stop jerk motion

Crappie - Fair: Crappie bite has slowed down inside the reeds but anglers may have success on the edges at sunset. Troll slow with small crankbaits, will be where the bait fish are. Or you can try jigging with a feathered or a normal jig/ plain hook with leeches, minnow, crawlers. feathered doesn't need bait.
not my pic<

Walleye - Good: Walleyes are biting well. Billy's Reef and Gilmore's have been producing. Docks near the outlet on the south shore, city beach are also still picking up some walleyes. Dodge's Point seems to be consistent. Boat anglers are doing best trolling crankbaits or fishing live bait rigs with leaches. ^ pretty much says it all, for crankbait you'd want a mid to deep runner. lindy rig for live bait rig. Leeches or a long crawler, don't bunch up the worm hook it once in the "head" and let it hang long. Troll with one or both of these set ups around the drop offs at Dodge's Point.
(Lindy rigs, floating jigs, 3 way swivel,no snag sinkers)

Muskellunge - Good: Anglers are having success near the island or rock reefs near the areas that yellow bass are spawning. Incidental catches from walleye anglers trolling crankbaits. Requires heavy gear and big lures. Sort of in a different category from the rest.
Best bite is before sunrise to about 8 a.m.Never caught a yellow but they sound easy to catch. ^ says it all.

Daredevils work very well for predator fish. Cast and retrieve or troll.

Then there's always bobbing for panfish.

I am by no means an expert I fish for fun on occasion. There are many more experienced people on the site. GWN and Dangledo off top of my head. Some guys who fish tournaments etc. This is just some basics on what I know.

Talk to some experts at the bait shops for info on what they're biting on, what colors to use.

Depending on the boys age and the size of the motor you could teach them how to drive the boat. Depending on the boat do some tubing or knee boarding. You sound like a cool mom!

Happy Fishing.

Do not trust the pusher robot. We are here to protect you from the terrible secret of space. Humans must be shoved. They must go down the stairs. Shoving is the answer. Humans must go down the stairs. I have shoved many humans,,,,,
Just don't go to a fishy house and gut the penis…

It depends what kind of fish you are going for as far as bait, type of line, pole, tackle, time of day blah blah blah (I'm married to a fisherman and have fisher children)

ETA: sorry hit reply thinking this thread only had the first 2 pages.

In college we used to just stick an electrode in the water and put on rubber boots and power the generator on...

Fish all float to the top ready to be collected and sorted. This was a research expedition I was on to track the paths of salmon in rivers.
