Your Ancestry

I've always been interested in where our ascendants came from, especially personally. There's a lot of stuff you can learn from knowing about the genes you carry and where they originated from.

For example, Sickle Cell anemia - originated as a defense mechanism to the malaria virus which came from mosquito's inhabiting mostly tropical climates. Therefore, it's rare for someone with European descent to end up with sickle cell anemia and is found much more common in people with African descent.

I've always been curious to find out what kinds of things I might be a carrier of, what my genetic code says...

So how far back can you trace your ancestry?

For me, it's sad... I can't go back very far at all.

On my dads side, I'm certain of who my grandfather and grandmother were, this would take me as far back as around 1910-1912. I don't know what their parents nationality was, their names or if they emigrated to the US or if it was another generation or two farther back.

On my moms side, I only know the identity of my grandmother. I don't know her mothers or fathers nationality or who they were or anything.

So pretty much I only know the identity of ascendants in the last 100 or so years.

Anybody know any genetic tests they could run or where you could go to get something like that done?

My grandmoms sister traced theres back last year.She has this big print out of it.Her mom lived in italy then came over here and died.

my grandmothers side of the family lived in greece since before WWI.

ther than being a mut thats largest ethnicity is 1/4 greek, i have no idea what my ancestry could be. perhaps im related to some inventor or philosipher

Can't really trace much farther than the grandparents on dad's side for sure. I think I know the names of the great grand parents, not sure.
Mom was adopted, but her real family gave her old pictures and a history of her real family that dated back to the early 1800's.
I'm mostly Irish with a little Sioux.
You can join ancestry.com and look up old records. Costs like 20 bucks a month, I think. I have a free account, and I found a lot of the stuff I did by looking at the previews of the documents they let you see if you're not a paying customer.

Well let's see. I am the first generation born in the US, I don't know much about my dad allthough I know him. Don't care either.
I know my grandmom from my moms side. That's it. Oyeah and apparently my grandfather lives in ohio. That's all I know

My dad is from Arkansas and his mom had a bit of Native American in her, I believe down to me it's like 1/64th, so might as well be insignificant...

The origin of my name is Italian (as far as I know).

That's about all I know... :(

I think it would be really cool to know your lineage all the way back like 500 years!

I'm interested in hearing that story Cracker, how do you know that far back? Do you have charts? lol

No, actually it took all of 5 minutes. I knew of my great great great grandfather who was a US Congressman. Then I whipped up a site and found him (we are an old family as you can guess....one of the very early settlers in the USA), and on that site I saw someone else had traced the family back to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. I can probably take it back further if I try.
In the movie braveheart..... we are the third guy from the right on horseback.... :lol:
