How much is it going to run someone to grow 12 plants continually indoors? Startup costs + average seasonal costs.
Please compare dirt, aero, and hydro setups. thanks.

Costs.... Lights, pots, soil, or hydro set up, nutrients, fans, ducting, filters, seeds or clones, electricity Figure out what you are using then add it up. It all depends on what and where you buy everything.

once you have everything cost is just electricity, water, and nutrients. Or possibly if you want a tent and a/c or heater pr dehum.

it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want to get. Average? I would say 350$. light/soil/fans is the necessity and the more costly. I spent around 350 just on light and fan. If you want to go cheap you may regret it. If this is your first grow you may want to start simple and see how much you are willing to get into it.

That's such a vague and open ended question it really can't be answered. Like asking how much it would take to build a house for a family of 4 people.

What kinda house?

Your gonna have to spend many hours researching how you want to grow and come up with a game plan and a parts/materials list, then go online shopping yourself. You need to know your electricity cost as well and how to figure what it will cost to run your lights, fan, heaters, etc.

That said, starting from scratch with decent HID lights and other equipment, I'd think you'll be up around $1K in equipment and materials, plus electricity, if you do it right.

Nobody can tell what YOUR cost is going to be. If you start from scratch it would be much higher than somebody who grew before.

Can estimate what my LAST grow cost would be:

Lights: Had those already bunch of CLF's with fixtures for first first 3 weeks of grow about $150
2 HID sets 600W and 400W (had already) about $350.

Genetics (seeds) growing 7 strains about $100 + (on the cheap side cause of use of freebees, top notch genetics though - Sannies, PeakseedsBC.

Organic custom mixed soil grow, about $100 with nutes and supplements (spent more but have some left for next grow).

Estimated energy cost at .12 per KHW $100 +

Does not include pots, tables, racks extention cords, fans, odor control or any grow room preparation. So my cost is about $300 for this particular grow (no cost of lights or equipment, only reaccuring expenses).

If you start from scratch you need $800-1000 for quality 1-st grow if you shop around and spend wisely, most of it will be one time "investment".

I grow 12 plants under 600 and 400 so my expense for this grow is around $30 per plant.

listen to these folks man, "if you go cheap youll probably regret it" I went cheap on a grow. then I bought good quality stuff. worlds of difference. I now have about 1500 in my setup. That's small comparitivley to commercials and even most on here. but its suits its purpose well.

I can tell you what it costs me to do one plant (depending on how you look at it) in a perpetual grow.

I think I paid around $400 for my LED
Around $15 for a good auto bean
Probably around $5 in soil
I'd say around $10 in nutes
About $65 in electricity
And maybe 6 hours of my time taking care of it including the all time consuming trimming

If you buy cheap youll buy twice, as above, quality lasts and youll make it back. And like aim aim says you have to be more specific. He says 1000, id say probably 1500-1800 if youd like to get set up nice and cozy like. And again, thats not including the power. Buy once, buy the best, and itll all come back.

I agree with the buy once theory. Before I got my shit figured out I wasted a lot of money on shit I didn't need and on shit I had to rebuy. Growing ain't much different than motorcycles or pick up trucks. Buy a Harley and a Ford and be done with it. You'll rest easy knowing you have the best and won't you want for more.

Oh and dont mess with leds for 12 plants, get 1000 watt dimable hid lighting. Its the best light to grow with and the cheapest to get set up with. 1000 watt with bulb for around two hundred. LED equvilant for.....well idk actually but id figure its got to be around a grand at least and youll need two for sure or more. Soooo 400 bucks or three thousand? Hmmmmmm......... :):):)

most importantly it will depend on the size of the plants you are growing. 12 autoflowers under a t5 setup will be a lot cheaper than 12 scrogs under hid lighting. you need to be more specific with the space you are working with. also, if you are a newb; grow in soil and don't worry about hydro just yet. just my opinion but you are asking for more things to go wrong with hydro...and for a new grower it can be overwhelming.

I'm looking to run small small, lower powered LED's on top of each one or every 1-3.
Not exactly my first grow, hydro or dirt. I'll keep looking, but I'm not looking to push the electricity bill too high @ $.12/KWh so the plants should be a better strain. What are options for seeds in the US?

I can grow under Cfl using good nutes and genes in 2 gal.pots for about $6.oo
per Z. If that helps you any.

I wouldn't recommend a 1000w HID for a newb. You have a bigger chance of heat stressing your plants unless you are in a large area. I stepped up to 600w digital from a 400w magnetic and the difference is huge. It is just the right amout for my 3'x6'x6' box.

I am running a small cab (approx 24x36x24) for veg with a hood that holds 14 normal light bulbs. I just converted it from cfl to 9w cree bulbs from home depot. The bulbs were around $15 each but seem to work great for the plants, low heat, and of course next to no power draw. Moving from CFL in such a small place has also dramatically helped to keep the humidity up in there, whereas before I was struggling to keep it high without it causing my flower tent in the same room to get too high.

For flower I run an Area51 SGS160 that cost around $500. My tent is larger than the light can handle. I can fit three well trained plants under it. What I will say is that it performs as advertised.

LED has alot of upfront cost. Depending on how long it really lasts or how long until you decide to upgrade, it can be recouped. But I viewed it vs buying weed and in that respect, with one grow there is a postive ROI. But even if it lasts for 10 years, fact is that most of us who would get one today will likely get enticed by some new technology before ten years is up!
