NYC leads the way in the fight against poverty in the US

The new mayor of NYC, Bill de Blasio, was sworn in Wednesday by former President Bill Clinton on the frigid steps of the City Hall. He is the first Democrat to hold that position in over 20 years, and he is taking over from the Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who seemed to be more concerned about the size of soda containers, than the growth of poverty in that city, as it soared to new heights under his administration. He seemingly just watched as the numbers of poor increased, and the middle class decline to record highs and lows, respectively. That an acknowledged progressive liberal has been elected by a landslide in the most important city in the world is a telling sign of the future of America, in my opinion. He has promised that one of his most controversial programs will be implemented immediately, which will focus on education. He swore to provide pre-kindergarten opportunities for all students city wide. His method of helping to pay for this program is by adding a luxury tax on the rich, which has been met with the usual Republican rant that it will drive the wealthy from the city. I would like to know where they plan to go, and if they bitch about paying a few dollars more to live in the greatest city in the world, I say let them go, because they don't deserve that honor to be called a New Yorker (I was born in NY so I can say that) It's too bad that Washington doesn't see the urgency as Mayor Bill de Blasio does, but then in that conservative mindset so prevalent in that den of incompetents called Congress, that has been essentially been blocking anything considered progressive for decades. The conservatives state that all you have to do is pull your boot straps up to succeed in this country, even if you don't have the boots, or education to start with. It seems that is going to start to change, where at least in NYC, kids will start on a somewhat equal footing as their wealthy counterparts uptown. Time will tell how it works out, and it might actually succeed as long as the conservatives stay out of the way. Peace

The war on poverty is just another term for more taxes.
It's nothing but lip service to garner votes, how many democrat presidents have declared a "war on poverty" and how's that worked out?

I mean, honestly, education is not the problem..........but the Dem's will say anything "that sounds good" to suck more money out of the economy for their agenda.

Cool, it won't be long then until NYC is just as equal as Detroit.
The major reason that Detroit failed was their unfortunate dependence on the auto industry that went belly up as a result of poor engineering and even worse management. The common excuse is because of unions, which has always been an excuse by conservative ball sacks.

Maybe we need more taxes, at least on the obscenely wealthy. How's that for a thought. The Republicans don't want taxes, because they are greedy cocksuckers that want to keep all the money that they made off the backs of their underpaid employees. They want it all, and NEVER want to contribute to the society they owe everything to.

So your saying that a lack of EQUAL educational opportunity is not a problem?. That logic is telling as to why we have the most ignorant students on the fucking planet, courtesy of the Republican agenda to cut every educational program that helped the disadvantaged, going from Head Start to Pell Grants. We reap what we sow, and so far all we are sowing are idiots.

The government is responsible for education yet you look to the government to fix it... LOL!!!

Detroit had race riots that chased a lot of people from the city. Then they started raising taxes and yes, the rich left. Unions had ridiculous pay scales and pensions which caused the city to use the majority of funds to pay people who were retired and diminishing resources on police, fire and utiliteis. Basicially after that it was a spiral into a shithole... Detroit has a museum with a 2 billion dollar art collection yet cannot pay the cops...

And you want government to fix it? ROFLMFAO!!!

I'm not quite convinced DeBlasio is all he's hoped to be.
"Pre-Kindergarten opportunities"? What does that mean, and how does that fit into a progressive or Soc-Dem construct? That is, what does it lead to next?

Opening a game of pelota using a Wiffle ball is questionable.
Is he a visionary with intent, or a convenient image as frontman?

It's not "THE" problem, but it is "a" problem. But it's shown in numerous studies, no matter how much money you throw into education, it won't change a thing for the better. The break-down of the American family is a far more reaching problem which contributes to the continuing failure of the U.S. education process.

If you believe that you're a fool, who has been lied to by an even bigger fool.

A lot of folks from around here went up north to work in the auto industry in the 50's and 60's.

One of them did quite well and managed to get quite high up in the union, he is my mothers first cousin. We used to get to see these fuckers once a year when they came down for a family reunion in mid summer.

According to him, and I have no reason not to believe him, there was a perceivable shift in the union from the time he first got involved, until the time he retired in the mid 1990's.

The auto workers union went from being pro-worker to anti-company.

There are numerous stories out there of sabotage and other nefarious shit done by the unions.

The only thing management did poorly was not relocate to Georgia or Alabama or another right to work state so they could tell those fuckers to fuck off.
