got a novelty kit, little one gallon job and just bottled my first IPA. it was fun, I'll do it again and upgrade equipment. Next time I plan to steep with some stems maybe some popcorn something with terpenes in it. so many possibilities to combine hobbies....:leaf:

You can make a great sprouted seed tea from barley for your plants. A worm bin would also be a great place to toss your spent ingredients from your brew.

Just sayin:eyesmoke:

Doc, I got a big book with my little novelty kit and the way they take oak chips and steep them makes me look at my stem pile totally different. I also started watching a brewing show about fish heads (or close to that name) brewery and the crazy shit they brew they strain some recipes through wild grasses again....the stem pile hmmm. I know THC is alcohol soluble but the ins and outs are all hypothesis and trial and error. Think I'll get a pre packed IPA recipe and try some things. maybe I'll have the time to post some of that stuff or journal it. wonder if Ironlabs would test some homebrew for THC.... so many possibilities and combinations

Thats awesome!
I bet Iron labs could test it.
Please keep me posted on what you try and learn. A journal would be great....Im very interested.

I used to AVIDLY homebrew but haven't in years. I always believed that a high-alcohol beer would be able to leach THC from buds but I never tried it. If stems had sufficient flavor I believe that would also pass into the beer...

Higher alcohol level would be the key!

I've also always been fascinated by the relationship between hops and cannabis, they are cousins. Could one graft cannabis onto hop rhizomes? Would the psychoactive properties remain?

Someone less lazy than me must perform these studies!

well I have a newbie's enthusiasm but I wouldn't call myself less lazy than anyone LOL. help hub, do you think the best first try to infuse would be to put some hash or skiff/dry sift into the bottle at bottling or earlier in the process? I think I'll also try the next go round adding some buds directly to the boil for flavor only-I assume the temps we use would be too high and destroy all the good stuff but I am new NEW N-E-W at this.

You guys are funny. I actually tried infusing bud in beer last summer with some buddies. We added the bud to boil and "dry hopped" it after fermentation. The END RESULT..... A pale ale that had a bad funky earthy taste that didn't get you a buzz at all but left you with cotton mouth.

I like the keif at bottling idea. It should reduce bad funky earthy taste but I'm curious if it would still leave the cotton mouth.

Based PURELY on conjecture, I would add hash or keif or whatever you are gonna use at bottling. It would be easier to consistently dose each bottle that way. Are you using priming sugar to carbonate your bottles? If so, I would add it then, after the priming sugar has been melted in a little water.

It is my opinion that the buds can be handled just like hops. For flavor and aroma I would add them to the kettle at the end of the boil, after the heat has been cut off and while you are cooling the wort. Then, for the THC addition I would add the buds in the secondary fermentor, just like you are dry-hopping. I'd leave them in there a week or so but that would be something you would just have to play with to get the exact time figured out. Most important would be to do this "dry-budding" after ALL fermentation is complete so as to keep all the flavor and aroma from being carried away by the carbon dioxide escaping during fermentation.

All stuff I've thought about in the past but back when I WAS homebrewing I never had the excess of bud needed to try this...

I wonder if the funky flavor could be strain-specific? Do you remember what strain you used? I could really see that being a factor...

Somebody SOMEWHERE has done this successfully I bet...

You pretty much got my exact experiment right there. I would add hash by weight to the bottles at the time I add the priming sugars. I was thinking 30-40 days before use to get the tiny alcohol content to leach as much as possible. I have this krishna strain that I was going to dump off my list because of poor yield but it has amazing flavor and a strange mutation. it leaks its sugars in little sticky globs around the stem. it tastes so damn sweet-forgot the technical name of the sugar leaking but that should make a sweet sugar that may be fermentable. I think I'll ass some sugar trim to the end of the boil and strain through crushed stems and add the hash to an IPA kit. my one gallon set up should be perfect until I get this down. obviously a labor of love and scientific curiosity I'd have to charge like 10$ a bottle to cover ingredients LOL. not that anyone else will get this special brew if she comes out nice.

some of my research

seems most people are "infusing" green dragon into the brew at bottling. I was hoping for a different way than to just mix in some tincture with it but that's what I find to be the norm.

Try 'grafting' erb with hops for a real interesting experiment
......I have been waiting for someone to do this and I 'abstain' from alcohol.....(I'm dumb enuff)

--but I would enjoy a good michigan brewed hemp ale if it was available......there is another thread somewhere where we discussed this same topic....mayb a yr(?)ago.......?

hops is the 'sister' plant to mj.....easily grafted and not sure why no one has attempted this yet unless big alcohol is waiting for the 'markets' to open up-

chk out out 'humboldt hemp' ale......they have been brewing it for years

a friend that worked for them was allowed 1gl a night of the 'unpasteurized' version to bring home......now that's a drink!!

absinthe also is hemp derived......:-P

Buck I have tried a stab at grafting and its a motherfucker. I have about a dozen attempts and 0 successes and that's from on side of a plant to the other, not mixing strains or close sister plant yet. I have my sister bring me buzz beer from Canada when she comes but its getting sparse. not always available in every town province WTF ever they have there. its nice. let me read these links. I enjoy your links every time

I've 'dryhopped' beer with herb, it's a great way to ruin your beer and waste your herb. Let me clarify; the beer will give you a canna buzz but it's nothing close to taking a hit off a pipe. The beer will also taste 'green' which is a failure IMO.

I'd bet the best way to give your beer a canna kick is to soak some high quality water hash in a few ounces of vodka for a few days, then strain and add to your bottling bucket.

In the end I'd recommend that you keep the two hobbies separate as you cannot blend one to the other without compromising both.
