LED Stealth Filing Cabinet Build/Grow"

Hey all,

I'm making a little grow box inside a filing cabinet that looks like this:

It's LED and going to run two 120mm fans (exhaust and intake). At the moment I'm having issues with how to install my LED to the top.

Here's what the LED looks like:

and the attachment points:

It came with a hanging kit but I really want to make it a permanent fixture and just adjust the height of the plant rather then the light because the smallness of the cabinet, so I need to work out a way to attach it.

this is the cabinet itself:

So yeah any help would be absolutely sick! I'll also make this like a journal I guess as I finish building the grow box and starting actually growing something.

P.S: I am an absolute newbie at this, so feel free to give recommendations at any and every point.

You can fasten to the top using something like this (that particle board must be predrilled so it doesn't crumbled to dust when you screw into it)

http://www.homedepot.ca/product/3-inch-zinc-screw-hook/818175

and then use one of these hooks to fasten light to screw hook

http://www.homedepot.ca/product/1-8-in-quick-link-2-cd/969776

OR you can use a couple of links of any type of chain u can open and use this as a fastener

Sweet, thanks for the help man, do you think that it'll be strong enough to hold the weight? That's probably the thing I'm most worried about tbh, the screw just slipping through the particle board and the light dropping onto the plant.

Would one of these be an upgrade, or do you think that it'd be fine:

Hey llovebush, nice reccomendation. You're right. The first 2 links should do.
Though your link Enisso is an upgrade, IMO both (simple and with nuts) will do just fine if you put quick links for safety.

Cheers mate, nice space!!

So I've attached both fans now.

Now I've got a little issue where I can't fit the bloody light in due to that top pipe coming out, any ideas? I'm thinking I'm going to have to cut it off but then I don't know how I'm going to block the light?

Cheers

You could get something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120mm-Staubfilter-Luftfilter-Fan-silent-Gehause-Lufter-Filter-fur-PC-Computer-HE-/400585294198?pt=DE_Computing_Lüftergitter_Filter&hash=item5d44be8176
It has two parts: One is being screwed on the one side of the pc fan and the other one gets stuck on the 1st with a space between. In there you throw a slim carbon filter just for the light. Your fan will lose some of its exhaust power due to the filter blocking the air a bit but at least you can fit the light in!
You'll regain your height! Cos when stealthy, you need to make full use of your space!

Cheers!!

Put your light trap on the outside...sorry I didn't get back sooner. About the light, if you want a different method to hang it you could drill right through the top where the light will attach. Then you can use a nut and eye bolt with washer top. Not the most attractive way but you can always cover the exposed nuts with paint, some kind of electronic device. My preferred method of covering my nuts might be a lil offensive so I'll keep it to myself.

Yeah that's true, don't want too much on the outside though. Kinda kills the 'stealth' part a bit, with the light I've gone with your first idea, I don't want exposed nuts everywhere :P

That's perfect! Thanks for your help guys, got one ordered hopefully it'll be here soon with the Mylar and the power adapter for the fans.

Does anyone know how to change a thread name/if it's possible? Would like to get rid of the Light Attachment Issues part. Also, is there anything wrong with using a shallow pot in order to maximise the height available? Am I correct in assuming that a pot that's like 15cm high and a 10cm diameter wouldn't be as good as like a 39x23x5 pot? Will the roots grow outwards rather than straight down? Cheers!

Hey Enisso!! post your request here asking for a mod to change the name of your thread!
https://www.rollitup.org/make-your-requests/
Once someone's answered, just post again about the name, he'll get to you. Just find a name once and for all, cos' I don't know if it's possible to change it all the time!!
My English is shitty, so I can't understand what's a shallow pot!! Sorry!!

Cheers!!

Cheers man, it's just a pot that's not as tall as other pots? Maybe a picture would help:

Shallow:

Normal Pot Plant:

So basically the root system would go outwards correct?

Thanks for the translation mate!!
Hmm not necessarily.. I mean the bigger the pot the bigger and stronger the root system.
Now, as for the direction of the roots, I've heard (but I'm not sure about it) that watering less but more often, is going to make your roots spread to the sides and not as much downwards.
I might be wrong though, it's something I just read, it's not scientifically proven, I think.
Another thing: Autoflowers tend to go downwards too but they have some serious (root) stretch towards the sides!!

Hope I helped!

Cheers!

Just a bump, got the power supply for the fans today and wired it all up!

Works a dream, just waiting for the mylar to turn up and it'll be pretty much finished bar any last minute fixes.

I'd post more pictures but they'd be pretty much identical anyway.

Mind posting a picture of what you got so far? Would love to see your box for inspiration on my grow :)
Nothings really changed from the last pictures other than I've got the light in:

Still waiting for the mylar to rock up, considering sound deadening the box because I'm not too keen on the amount of noise coming out at the moment, thoughts?

Edit: Should have mentioned that the noise issue is the light's fans not the PC intake/exhaust fans, is it possible to slow down the lights fans?

Came home from work today and finished the extra cutting to fit the top drawer! So happy right now. Got a bit of light leakage and still makes a fair bit of noise which is frustrating though. I think the light leakage will be gone when I put the Mylar in.

Great, great!! Getting it all together!!

Dunno bout the lights fan, but I wouldn't consider messing with it. I mean, it's working at this rate for a reason: keeping your leds cool!

Maybe try and add some foam on the top of your upper drawer?
COULD work, not for sure though!

Just don't put your mylar if you haven't resolved this issue, things must be done properly in order to keep this for as long as you wish and not mess with things!

Cheers!

Got the grill for the intake fan today and put it on. Still waiting for the mylar to turn up (probably going to send a passive aggressive message to the seller very soon! haha) and still haven't decided on whether to use some car sound deadener to make it quieter...
