Sochi!

Fun fact: more money was spent on Sochi than all other winter Olympics combined.

Fives times more per event is being spent at Sochi than Beijing spent.

How much of that construction $ and material ended up being used on new dachas?

Bumping my own thread.

Who thinks this is gonna be a disaster? I do.

50 billion spent on the 2014 games
The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics are the most expensive Olympics in history and cost more than every other Winter Olympics put together

The $51 billion cost is more than four times higher than the $12 billion cost Russia originally projected when it won the Games in 2007. Cost overruns for Olympics aren’t rare; according to University of Oxford researchers Allison Stewart and Bent Flyvbjerg, Olympic Games “overrun with 100 per cent consistency,” a feature that makes the Games unique among mega-spending projects. But even by the normal Olympic standard — the average cost overrun of Games between 1960 and 2012, the researchers found, was 179 percent in real terms and 324 percent in nominal terms — Sochi is worse.

already a fail!

News is reporting that the Russian Gov near the game s are poisoning all dogs which are roaming the area..

""These dogs are biological trash."”

Officials at Sochi city hall have ordered more stray dogs to be exterminated over the Russia Winter Olympics.
Speaking to the Associated Press, the head of a pest control company that regularly puts down stray dogs said officials have asked more to be killed for the duration of the Games.
Alexei Sorokin, director general of pest control firm Basya Services, said they have been instructed to catch and dispose of any stray dogs in the city area.
He did not say how the dogs were killed, whether they were shot or poisoned, or what they do with the carcasses afterwards. He also refused to say how many dogs are killed each year, calling it a "commercial secret".
However, some animal rights groups say over 2,000 stray cats and dogs were killed in 2013, with charities filming evidence of animals being killed in the street at night.
Stray dogs have been a problem in Sochi for many years, with some of them displaying aggressive behaviour and biting children. Animals abandoned by their owners in Russia are often unneutered, as this can be expensive, so they breed quickly and numbers multiply fast.

It really sounds like they have managed to create an utterly joyless venue that will have no useful purpose afterward. I always wondered how much of that tradition was from Communism vs. Being Russian.

I give it about 8 hours before something goes really wrong there.. too much security.. too large of a venue... too much potential for shit going wrong

It's either an RPG or a fish (yes i think fish)
If you arn't allowed to go fishing in the toilet , then it's just silly to put fish in there aswell !
How would one get fish out of toilet , if fishing is not allowed ?
No playing St. Petersburg Mackerel Darts (glorious regional tradition),and
No baiting the john and promoting Proscribed Activity #4.

Agreed. Too close to the terror-heart of Russia as well. Oh, and too far from snow apparently.

My favorite unlikely scenario is a Somali pirate attack on the "coast cluster". Come to think of it, make that the "mountain cluster".

Winter Olympics are less of a draw for people who live in a winter wonderland. The 100M Frozen Sidewalk Dash is way more funny. The only security concern is in how many people see you dance like that.

Just me :)

I really like the Olympics. Winter ones included. It's often the lesser known sports you end up becoming incredibly involved in. I remember going crazy as Mo Farah battled to victory in London 2012. Shit was amazing.

Regrettably, as a guy that enjoys bumping uglys with other dudes. I feel that maybe I'm not supposed to watch or support this year's event.

Winter Olympics take me back to the 1976 Winter Olympics.. this was the year Mom and Dad upgraded to a color tv.. Me and my brother got the old black and white TV... remember waking up early and staying up late watching them...

b.w TV had no knobs so we used vice grips to change channels

Terror Warning! Exploding toothpaste? They would be better off shipping them in in packages of lightbulbs and shower curtains.
