okay well i hear ppl say you cant clone from a plant that has been cloned befor has to be from a mother plant is this true and if so whats the truth behind it whats reasoning for it not to work.

You can clone from a clone of a clone that was already cloned from another clone. All a mother plant is, is a plant that is in veg state that one is growing for the purpose of taking clones. It can be from seed or clone.

Stdag,
Like the guys said, you can indeed clone from a clone...forever. I think what you may have heard is that it's not a good idea to do so. And even that is questionable. I've heard people say they've cloned over 20 generations with no problems.

There is a chance, however small, of errors creeping in. Replicant fading I believe is what it's called. Over time, the small errors could accumulate and possibly you could end up with clones that are weakly and not as good as the original seed plant that it came from.

But I've never heard of anyone actually having that problem, so I believe it's more of a theoretical issue.

Many here clone from a clone mostly every year, it saves on seeds. that is what cloning is all about, saving time ...lol

finally a thread where everyone agrees.
I would assume clones from clones has been done so often that it's considered a normal practice
Dr. Jekyll

Not to be a nay-sayer or just offering contradiction, but each generation of a clone from a clone becomes just a bit less stable, and eventually they can become unstable
There is a limit to how many generations can be cloned from a clone

^^^i did sooo much research on the topic not too long ago. i found almost nothing regarding mutated genes or any data to suggest instability. i do remember reading a while back (school days) that mutation happens but it exists more in theory than in practice.

you can clone from a clone a thousand times. BUTTTTTTTTTT there is a problem . the seed you plant Is 100 percent . the clone off that plant is 75 % the next cut is 50 % the next is 25 % the next has lost the genetics . it will start to grow wild. after the first cut from seed you will notice a decrease in yield and thc strength . the more you clone from a clone the further you get away from the seed. this is an major issue. after 3 or 4 times you will notice it will not look that great when flowering and being smoked and when its dry it will not smell . might smell like hay. or wet grass. its very common to over clone. my advice is what commercial growers do the professionals . me . plant that seed . never flower it leave it in veg for a year or so until you get sick of it . just take cutting off of it, your genetics are the very best, mommy plant. what im saying here is proven . if your only doing it for our personal smoke , it will be fine. just know sooner or later its time to plant a seed .

ive got 6th gen plants still producing the same quality bud as i started. maybe its just the strains im running but ive never had a issue with the genetics being watered down in any way from doing this.

my advice above is for large scale growers and people that grow for a living . personal smokers. can grow and it will be just fine for them . but a commercial grower better have the best there is or they will be sitting on pounds and pounds of weed . and not sell it . the market is flooded with weed in Michigan legal state, lot of great weed here, it gets better every day I see some high times quality at shops for sale .

FROM ED ROSENTHAL:
Yet the question of genetic drift over many generations is not unreasonable. Mutations occur on a regular basis in asexual as well as sexual reproduction. Genetic researcher Barbara McClintock has discovered that genes jump around on chromosomes, and recent studies have proved that they also jump from plant to plant. Any change in gene patterns, whether the gene is on the chromosome or has broken apart and lost or gained material, results in changes in the plant. Thus the variety can gradually shift over a period of time.
Clones propagated over many generations along separate lines will look slightly different. Perhaps the answer is to preserve the mother plant for as long as possible ? but even a single plant will exhibit some drift. Remember that during sexual reproduction mutations are more likely to occur than during the asexual reproductive process of cloning.
Viruses sometimes attack cannabis. They can affect the plants' health, growth and potency as well as affecting the genetic makeup of the plant. Once a plant is infected with a virus, it can never recover. For that reason, more than one plant of a special line should be maintained.
For all its faults, cloning plants is the best way to preserve a plant's particular characteristics with the fewest genetic changes.
END

a study by Oxford Univ shows mutations can occur due to influence of viruses and environmental conditions. also growers of old heirloom roses will tell you new clones of old heirloom varieties are not nearly as desirable as old clones from the same varieties. something they call deterioration...http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/roses/msg0318210415904.html

an interesting read from the Univ of Oxford

You are so wrong. I have 5 strains I have had over 5 years and I have a harvest every three weeks and I continually am resetting new yield marks. I currently have 13 strains and no mothers and 2 of the strains that I have had for 5 years I got from a friend that had them over 8 years before me. and by the way, the hay or wet grass smell has nothing to do at all with cloning, its from not drying the plaant properly after harvest. Here's your sign, dumbass.
