Can you live on minimum wage? (Calculator)

Bro, it depends on your major.
What are you interested in
Science, history, technology, art, film, music, etc. Tons of stuff. But how would I pay for my side of the bills if I used the time I work to go to school? Also, closest school is 24 miles away and I don't own a vehicle

Holy shit I wish you were right! A student loan (a college degree) used to be an investment in my future. Today, that is completely uncertain and nobody is guaranteed anything. You run the risk of wasting 4-6 years of your life and thousands of dollars on a "...well, maybe you'll get a good job, we hope so..".. It's no doubt better than just a high school diploma, but going $60,000 in debt for a $40,000/annual job doesn't seem logical to anyone doing it, and that's the shit we're looking at now
Can we agree that college is not about your financial future it is about the pursuit of study. Many college majors will not be of significant benefit without an advanced degree and remaining within academia. Business and education are different. My education was the best thing I ever did.

People do overcome such obstacles and I do understand your point.

I'm not sure what you mean. It was initially meant for the pursuit of study? I would agree with that. It is today? No, I think it's mainly viewed as a means to try to secure a financial future

I went to a community college, got my Associate's and am now in a university for my Bachelor's. I work a minimum wage job. I have zero family contribution. And I'm doing just fine. There is a PLETHORA of assistance for those who need it. I work my ass off for my future, and it's infuriating that people want more hand outs when our government is already a bloated mess.
I think this is a pretty narrow minded way of thinking.. You had it extremely tough so if anyone else has it easier than you, it's "infuriating"

Yeah, I would agree with that[/QUOT
I attended a private university and the majority of students were there a) because they earned it b) their parents could afford tuition 3) the potential job in the future and the sad reality is that so many get very little out of the limited coursework in the subjects they are interested in. I was lucky to be able to study with the freedom I did. It just pains me to see people value their resume above all.

Its fucked up when you are paid a salary of 50,000 and after fica and federal tax, its like 34000 and thats without state taxes taken out. Minimum wage is impossible along with the average american wage if you are supporting a family. From how much we pay in taxes, what do we really get in return? Harassment from law enforcement and no healthcare lol.

Consider yourself extremely lucky, man.. I'd attend so many classes for the learning experience alone if I could..

Exactly. Meanwhile we waste billions on wars, billions on putting non violent drug offenders behind bars, millions on straight up bullshit.. No healthcare, no education... our priorities are monumentally fucked in this country.. We could end poverty, cure homelessness, put a roof over every Americans head, offer free education and healthcare and do it all while sending an example to the rest of the world if we so wanted to. Some of us do, but the ones that don't are the ones that truly have the power to change things..

It is honestly tragic we live the way we do in this country, especially when you hear some of the things that are said in opposition to said arrangements..

raising min wage...making my dollar worth less
the proponents for higher minimum wage are more for penalizing the business owner
look at these crybabies try to reel off their lies unabated.

you guys need some fucking kleenex since you clearly have no bootstraps?

i mean, all those min wage people can just pull themselves up by the bootstraps instead of crying about how impossible it is to work full time and make a living wage, so why can't you crybabies do the same?

robert, i know you are a major racist douche, but why not pull yourself up by the bootstraps and just work harder and earn more instead of crying and whining about a regularly scheduled minimum wage increase?

and jahbrudda (who likes to cite white supremacists for his information), since you are clearly the self made republican archetype of success, why not just work harder and be a smarter job creator business person instead of constantly whining and crying about having to comply with a minimum wage increase?

why do you two get to be such entitled little crybabies while the folks working full time and earning minimum wage have to pull themselves up by the bootstraps?

it's crybaby hypocrisy at its finest.

Or do you just want to slant the playing field back in favor of your team??
Do you have a problems with unions influencing politics?

UNIONS BAD! ME NO LIKE UNIONS!

simply hysterical. bleat, bleat bleat. bleat some more.

And raising the minimum wage does nothing, it just increases the floor (it's still the floor) and fucks the guys just above it.

Then there's the inflation argument, is it assisted by increases in the minimum wage? Iv seen no hard evidence statistically, but logically speaking if you increase the cost base for a business they put up prices to absorb it, this is a fact.

The lefties argument is ridiculous, as is the righties.

You can't increase the wealth of the lower segment of the population by ripping off the higher segment. However, you also cannot have corporations involved with Government as they muddy the whole system.

My solution? Free education from primary right up to higher education are what are needed.

Both sides are partially right and partially wrong, yes people need to pull themselves up "by the bootstraps" but with free education they are given an enviroment to do so.

But don't follow the mistakes of Europe, don't allow it to become an effective yet wasteful entity.

My 2c.

EDIT: Damn you dictionary, adding random words.

When an unwanted third party to a transaction intervenes there are usually unintended consequences.

For instance two people want to transact, and agree to the terms of the transaction, then an unwanted party, let's call them "government" comes in and says they can't make that transaction. Hmmm, where oh where have I seen this kind of uninvited participation happen?

Hmmm....puff, puff, hmmm. Could it be that people that use prohibitionists tactics would ever EXPAND their "logic" into other areas of control? Nah, THAT could never happen....puff...puff. Careful what you wish for, Pot users.

Minimum wage increased and higher education are hard to argue against as an objective American. Dumb and poor is not the country that I want to live in.....anymore. The dialogue is seldom to recognize the possibility of the benefit of more money out there. Businesses need more consumption and perhaps there is a circularity between revenue and wages paid out....just sayin. Educated people will make far more over a lifetime and that will end up in the hands of job creators no? What immediate need do people that argue against education serve, it seems unreasonable to allow our country to decline in terms of technology, medicine, and education as it has. Militarism is the one thing we still do well and don't mind it serving the public good so much. I can't understand a bootstrap society maintaining itself without the basic tools....education is one of them. Now, fat, dumb, and docile may be the plan the government wants for us but if that is so the Republican patriot does what? We sink or swim, me or we? How little the benefit of minimum wage going up is to those earning it seems like proof of how little detriment it is on the businesses pay out. Don't mistake this for partisanship, I want a better country...perhaps I am wrong and right. I have made minimum wage, I have a degree, and I have owned several businesses and have earned my current perspective.

Min. wage is an aggressive act of totalitarianism against the very group of entrepreneurs that this country was founded on and a higher (academic) education is over-rated.
