Now that's neat. I want do something like that for side lighting next time. Where'd you get the info on removing the globes? That's a funky-looking light fixture there. Was that recommended by The Dawg as well? Those are the 2700K 60 W Crees from Home Depot, right?
The fixture is this: http://www.phototron.com/index.php/accessories/sl-20-socket-kit.html which like everything "tron" related, is expensive - I had it already. I use a length of chain to drop it drop it low low... They are, in fact, the ones at the Home Depot. I couldn't walk past the display without giving it a try.

He pointed me to Chronicool, who's a "do it yourself"er. I just poked around out there in his posts to find what I was looking for. There are some instructions to heat them in the oven at 2--something F, and use gloves to remove, but you risk overheating the LEDs...some people said they had some stop working. I just used needle nosed pliers to bust it and pull away all of the pieces - ran the Dremel around the edge to sand any glass shards. Originally tried cutting with the Dremel, but boy does that weird coating on the diffuser globe STINK when it gets really hot. I wasn't grooving on the possible chemical crap that was kicking around.

Petflora, at least in the last section I was reading, was still undecided as to whether removing the globe was that big of a deal. That is probably one of "those" topics. I just decided to because I thought it couldn't hurt and took up less space - and just plain looks cooler that way...lol.

Creative placement that has evolved...lol. The LED bulbs fit in regular bulb sockets - it is this one : http://www.amazon.com/Cree-9-Watt-Daylight-5000K-Light/dp/B00BXFP0SS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393280815&sr=8-3&keywords=cree+led+60w

I might actually get a couple of 'Y' splitters and double them up. Each end was wired for 20W, so I should have 4 watts to spare. Thanks!

Ok, thanks for the info, gb. I hope they go on sale again. I want to buy maybe 8-10 of them if I grow 2 plants, maybe more.

In that Phototron tube they look like a prop from the original Star Trek series, something Scotty would pull out of one of his engines. Except in the 1960's it would have had little flashlight bulbs on it instead of LEDs.

Had Neecy out for some defoliation of her downtown, and this is the PERFECT example of why you shouldn't flower in the Phototron (or at least why I don't). Again, most of you experienced folks know this - was just a good chance for me to show off that NASTY LITTLE BEOOOTCH. That was her in there just 3 weeks ago.

and just because nobody else I know knows what a big deal it is...I just ordered my first Area 51 light. Many thanks to Daveroller, The Dawg, and Bad Karma (listed alphabetically, of course...) - you guys are entirely too good at helping me find new places to spend my money...whether you are aware of it all of the time, or not. Now, I wait for the delivery man... :hump:

Only been looking into Hans, but heard a lot about the A51 kit, bet that set you back a bit of $$$$?

Will have to let us know how you get on with it and what you reckon to its performance for the $$$ I am well interested in LED...just pretty expensive for the "Good" Kit, but hey most things worth having are...

It will be maybe another month, maybe two before I can invest in a good panel...though in the mean time I might start looking into cheaper options(Still LED) and strip em back or disassemble em and try and make a "Budget Panel" All excited about LED again now....OOOooo greatbranch what you done to me....

But seriously I used to build computers n fix em(Still do this for Fam & Friends) so I'm off to Google some D.I.Y. LED Project...give me summat to do while saving the $$$

Peace

Y'know some peeps really slag LED off, and for the life of me can't see why.....I mean I've seen some pretty Good Grows done with em and that's just on RIU.

Honestly, I have been surprised with my two Blackstar UFOs and little HPS150. I don't have to fight the heat, and that helps on the power. I am thinking about running the same strains in same conditions in two tents and putting the A-51 against my other setup. It is a little skewed toward my existing set as far as wattage, but from what I have seen around RIU alone, the Area-51 should hold its' own. I am SO EXCITED!!!!:weed:

Think I've said before my m8 hippy was always harping on about LED's but this was like maybe 7yrs ago...I mean it's taken my 5 them 7 yrs to just think "Yeah F%@k it lets Grow My own" and after going from CFL>GIANT CFL> SMALL HPS> BIG HPS...learning and trying new things always...I may be one of the last to jump on to LED but it will happen, just a question of When...

Side by Side Grows(or near as damn it) with the same Strains be great Thread/Post/Journal....

just been trimming My Samsara Green ~ Love Potion...The Smell is outta this world....hmmm

:o

EDIT: you may have already said? but which(Watt) A51 unit did you go with....?

I didn't say, but I ordered the SGS-160. They are taking pre-orders for the new one, and Jeff said they will start shipping the last week of March. My schedule is pretty tight as far as need, so I am perfectly happy with one of the last generation. I prefer having the red spectrum for flowering is why I didn't order the XGS-190. I have seen all of the pros and cons according to everyone, and I prefer to use a mixture of lighting. My recommendation would be to ADD to your current situation with some LEDs and give it a shot in a corner. Fill light helps to tighten up buds that would normally be airy to someone used to running a room full of HPS lights, but the quality is out of this world. Frosty buds - always. And....here come the haters....lol

Lovin the Ghetto Ring :-) also the training of Ladies is interesting too..I've topped mine, didn't on the first round of Mothers, taking Clones of these Girls tonight...now my *new propagator here(First was damaged by Courier..set me back a couple of days) But must say the FleaBay company was pretty good and after sending em some Pics replaced within 24hrs  So taking cuttings tonight and finish room and check is light proof(Again) before I start 12/12.

Gonna have another look into the A51 kit...been looking at some of earlier D.I.Y. LED projects on Google...seems bad value...one guy spent over $230 could have got a Hans for that....though maybe not back then...Info on LED on the guys indestructable was pretty good though.

If LED keeps getting better & better, then in the Future will be less haters!! and peeps will be like Hps...why you wanna use on of those...Times change...progress cannot be stopped...

I think, but am not positive, that the replacement for the SGS-160 uses the same red, but has the XTE white bulbs like the XGS. When I was looking to place my order, he only had 2 of the "old" SGSs left. I don't know which I ended up getting, but he didn't sound like he was expecting a huge delay in shipping them out.

Removed the last remaining fan leaves that I left on Shakira today as the growth tips (eight of them) have reached the point where they do not need the extra "solar panels". Now, I just need to train those tips out to the side of the pot. When they reach that point, I will remove all of the growth back to the center and let them go with no further pruning unless it happens to be necessary. Notice that my ghetto ring happens to have 8 equally spaced spokes in it to aid in spacing and bonding! :hump:

And little Willomena is at stage 2 (the outsides of the 'H'...(purple)) - removed the fan leaves and started training those 4 growth tips in the directions I want - I have left the ones pointing upward for the moment, but will start pulling them in opposite directions from the others when they have grown out just a LITTLE more.

I appreciate it, CC! It isn't as scary as it seems after you're into it. Yes - 8 tops. Some guys go 16! I can't stress enough that you should read the original thread that was passed on to me... http://www.growweedeasy.com/main-lining-technique-nugbuckets I tend to snip a little earlier, leave fan leaves, then move on to cut those after a few days, but that is mostly to maintain control of the little ladies in my confined environment. I am anxious to see what difference it might make. It does add quite a bit of veg time onto your cycle, but like everything else, once you've absorbed the lag into your regular set, it doesn't make much difference. I also held off on nutrients for longer than I probably should have, so things are moving much more smoothly for me now. Thanks for checking it out!

Starting to slowly tug Willomena - notice that this go round, the two growth tips that were pointed in the air are being twisted in OPPOSITE directions, so the force on the plant is evenly distributed.
