The racist south really harmed the rest of the country.
If the racist southerners weren't so racist, many blacks wouldn't have been forced to flee for (relatively) less racist areas of the country, like Ohio and Michigan.
Imagine what nice cities today Cleveland and Detroit could be had the racist southerners not forced many blacks to migrate north, thus tainting the prestigious conditions of northern and Midwestern cities.
Look at the racist policies of homeowners in Chicago in the 1950's and 60's for example. They make Mississippi look sane.
