Roots coming out of plant pot

I have a plant that is about 3 weeks old and its roots have came out the bottom of the pot, how do I transplant this without damaging them or is there anything else I can do at the moment? Thanks

I have no suggestion. But, I can say, I transplant several times in the first month. So, roots showing, good time to transplant.

If you see heavy circling of the roots already, you waited too long. Cut into the circling 1/4 radius deep toward the stem, 4 places around the outside circle.

And go up into a slightly bigger container. That is the key and straight from Botany. Too much soil gets too wet for the root ball and will drown it.

So, just go 2 inches wider. Be gentle. Use moist soil with light feed and don't drown them. :)

I think these days, no matter what I plan for Veg/Bloom, getting strong roots to feed later, is the only road to my success.

Oh, for example with clones or a rooted seedling 6-7" tall..

-One week in a solo cup in light feed damp, but not sopping wet, coco coir - 200ppm. (my RO is about 50ppm) No extra water.

- One week in a 6" azalea cup. (very slanted sides, designed for tansplanting) 50% hydroton and coir. 1 x 250ppm light feed mid-week.

- 2.5 gal square side rose bucket...for better use of tight space, last transplant and I am done. They stay in that bucket but move thru 4 feeding stations and onto the bloom table, etc, without another transplant.

Everything Doer said. And this: Don't be afraid, just repot it. You aren't going to kill it if you report when it's roots are nice and healthy. I rough my roots up when I re-pot(unless it's mid-flowering) it invigorates them to grow out into the new soil. Good luck.

Yeah, roots are like stems. Cut them, they split.

I forgot to add an Uncle Ben tip, that I use.

When I go to the Rose bucket, I go deep. I knock inches off the height, to bury the next leaf node. By then that node is crying to root, I can hear it. :)

...so young lets hope its in a 4 inch pot, leaving the plant in there, protruding roots will dry out and fall off, thats aero pruning ...bad for cannabis and slow growth, even worse for autos ..!
best is a 3 us gallon / 15 liter pot fill with soil, scoop out a hole the size of the current pot, invert current pot plant drops out, place in prepared hole, water allow to recover in dim light 3- hours then continue

Thanks guys I have took a lot on board here, I will repot tomorrow I think and wont be scared if a few roots break, Appreciated :)

Thanks man, The pots are 4" so do you think I should transplant asap? into a 15 litre? I would prefer a small bushy plant than tall to be honest as I don't have a lot of space but I would also like a decent bit smoke too lol :D

Important to consider you future yield ...yes potup as soon as you can, to prevent delay in harvest date

Yes, what he said....dim light for a while. Check. And yield hinges on the beginning that is for sure. I got where I would just toss them if they get the dark purple, water pinched stems. No recovery from that.

I had to go through it a few times before I learned not to drown them.

Great thread, may i cut in? I was wondering if it was too late too transplant but sounds like if I cut the circle of roots and allow extra time we'll be okay?

Mine are about six weeks old in only quart sized planters. I'm debating between moving them into one gallon or five.

How long do u want to veg them? Even still, eight weeks in a five gallon container produces a lot of roots so it's better to go into the 5gal.

I agree. I'm not sure it takes more time when you cut the root cylinder about a 1/4 way deep top to bottom. Do that in 4 place around the cylinder of roots, and go to 5 gal.

You got roots. :)

Thanks to you both, suppose I best get on that tomorrow. I'd like to veg at least 4-6 more weeks depending (it's a mystery seed bag).

That's what I do. But I go into 2.5 gals and veg for 8 weeks. I want to do an experiment now of using a bigger bucket for one of the monthly start, clone pairs. See which get better yield.

I'm guessing the 5 gal.. But, the 2.5 gal is small enough for me to move around with one hand even with a 4 foot plant in it. So, handling in my tiny space is an issue.

I only have a 1 foot wide aisle to work in.

Right. I'd like a few that will fit into my small cab that will hopefully veg until i can grow out the ones in the 5gals.

Your experiment should be interesting, let us know the results for sure.

OK, next month, will start. I have a pair rooting in 2.5, right now. One will go into 5 gal and we can see.

just cut them off and scuff up the rootball before transplanting. if you have roots coming out of your pot your doing something right lol.

those breathable re-useable shopping bags are cool. they use the floor space very efficiently in tight grows. I didn't like the white mold they get on the bottom, beneficial or not. the only down-side to them I found.
