Slower is good since it implies low temperatures. The best thin film purge is just a cool breeze.

Depends on the local humidity. It is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air. You may need to get rid of the water afterwards.
Thin films and large surface areas are the key to speed and limited moisture pickup.
We cold boil it in thin films to keep heat down and speed things up.
Passive or "natural" evaporation is perfect for those who agree to the presence of a background flavor of ethanol in a bouquet.
When ethanol is evaporated without heating and vacuum, the resin film, or "skin" is formed on the evaporating surface,
which slows and stops the evaporation of ethanol from the depths.

Good point, the surface must be a liquid for the butane or alcohol molecules to readily escape.

So to be clear here, once we have filtered out the waxes and we are left with our oil ethanol solution you guys are just vacuum purging at ambient temperatures? Would it not be advantageous to hold it around 100f with a hot plate or something? Or will I really end up with fully purged shatter if I just vac at room temp?And I've seen people saying you need 15-65ml/g of oil before winterization. Is that really necessary? I have my oil completely dissolved in some amount less, is it possible I could be messing something up by not adding enough ethanol even if it appears to be dissolved?
damnit, i was trying to find this thread before i created a new one, but i couldnt. Sorry about the new one. I just wanted to say how i loved winterizing.
After i winterize and filter, i pour the everclear cocktail onto a nogoo plate which i float on some 150F water and let evaporate. Then i keep pressing it together while warming it on the water bath to make it easier to work with.

But i thought that the flavors were removed because they are contained within the fats/waxes that we remove in filtration after our winterization

first once it hits solvent and goes in solution, nothing is contained or attatched. unlike sieved hash. now what is wax? basically what we are pulling are long chain esters etc. so many types of wax will be slightly fragrant. this is similar to petroleum type products going from gas to jelly etc.
esters aldehydes ketones etc all can produce a pretty remarkable range of flavors. soapy or grassy to berries or apples are common in the strains I've grown. as chain length increases they become less volatile and smelly as well as more likely to coat your mouth etc
the flavorful compounds are more soluble in alcohol than the ccannabinoids. if anything is lost through the actual act of winterizing it wouldn't be the flavor... where you can lose flavor is the purge

got a good DIY for y'all.
. Didn't have a buchner funnel yet.
and didn't find any of the deals online to be friendly , especially with the sizing .
and I wanted one today!
so I went ahead and built one with one trip to the hardware store.. ( one could easily be salvaged with materials already at home, I just wanted all new clean parts)
supplies:
funnel, with built in mesh, $4
mason jar, $2
hoses, and fittings, had laying around house, roughly worth $2
hot glue, $1
cotton balls 50 cents.
under $10 and I got a huge funnel, and one gallon mason jar
I stuff the funnel with one coffee filter to line the mesh, the stuff the funnel with about 5 cotton balls.
post some pics soon, but its soooo. Simple! And flexible on parts available to make it
