Suggestions on Quiting Smoking...

Thought I'd turn to the hive mind for this question.

Been a pack a day smoker for about a decade. I'd like to quit. Now here are some aspects of my journey and attempts so far, but I tend to sabotage myself in this journey.

1. I don't want a nicotine replacement. I've tried vaping, gum, and patches. Really just want to be nicotine free.

2. Done chantex. Works and I love the dreams, but as it blocks the receptors, I simply smoke more. I do hate the headaches and nausea that accompanies the medication.

So if you've quit, what do you do in those times you really wanted a smoke? I was thinking of a combination of reduction/Journaling when I smoke with a combination of replacement therapy using gum.

I know I should just stop. Go cold turkey and remind myself of how terrible smoking is, that could be an option I simply know I'll be meaner than hell for a bit.

Thanks ahead for your opinions. I need to stop this disgusting, and expensive habit.

As a non-smoker I dont have much opinion but

But from a harm reduction point of view many say the roll-your-own from hole leaf tobacco is a huge improvement in bolth health and wallet

I grow my own (snus) and from being around in the fourms for a few years it's becoming a very popular thing to do . Most all those on the forms report major health improvements from a simple switch

what ever you do good luck

As a former heavy smoker over a period of several decades I can say the only way to quit is to just stop. You will have the urge for months but if you just say "no" you can do it.
I've been 7 years or so without a smoke and there are still times I think about having a cigarette. just say no.

Just ween down a little bit at a time. Go longer between cigs and smoke a half of one instead of a whole.. Try to stop smoking them on car rides and wait as long as you can each morning.... and then just jump off eventually. I never really did anything for cravings, just dealt with it. You have to really want to quit and stay quit more than you want a cigarette.

I even kept a pack on me for 2 weeks when I quit.

as a former smoker i can't believe people still smoke cigs this day and age.:dunce:

all you gotta do is stop being a fucking pussy.:wall: It's easy. just don't smoke. don't buy cigs and don't smoke them. if its an oral fixation, try sunflower seeds. but even if you fail, as long as you cut back, you're winning the battle.

sorry if thats not what you want to hear, but you can't be a child about adult shit. JUST DONT FUCKING SMOKE. its easy.:fire:

this.

I smoked a pack a day, started when I was 19 and quit smoking at 32. during these years I quit twice, once for 3 years and once for 2 years. the only way I could do it each time was by stopping cold turkey and by just saying no. I chewed, and still do, a ton of spearmint gum.

My dad has been a pack a day smoker for at least the entire time I've been alive. I think your journal idea is good, but I would also suggest looking at images of smokers lungs, youtube clips of people going through chemo from lung cancer, do shit like that to keep your mind in the right place

Yea but when your a smoker your like hmmm thats depressing beter go have a smoke lol
Yep, I understand that.. Same shit happens to me when I smoke weed these days..

It'll take a lot of work, no doubt about it, nicotine is some crazy shit. Just keep in your mind why you wanna quit. That's the part my dad always fails at because he's old enough to justify just saying "fuck it, I'm gonna die soon anyway..". Some tough shit to acknowledge as his kid..

I think another thing that might help is if you have kids, their life depends on yours, so you're not not smoking for yourself, you're not smoking for them. Something that motivates you above yourself, outside yourself, so you have something to be responsible for. That's actually something I'm currently going through with alcohol, except I don't have kids..

I quit using the patches. I was pretty committed at that point, and the patches made it much easier than I ever thought possible. This was after smoking for 40 years!

How did the patches help? Have you tried the gum? If so, how did that work out?

Never tried the gum. The patches took the edge off. I would constantly reach for a cig, then remember, "Oh yeah, I don't smoke anymore." It brought a smile to my face every time. You follow the instructions on the box about weaning yourself off the patches. I think the biggest thing is to not let your guard down. You can't have a cigarette, EVER. If you think you can just smoke one occasionally, you will fail.
