HID proximity

So we got our 1-st HID Lamp and it works really well. We're 2 wks into flower when I noticed a couple of tops getting burned by the heat. Instead of raising the lamp I decided to keep it close to the plants, but I used the dimmer switch to lower the power output to 75% (300w). I think it's a better solution than raising the whole lamp.

DSCN0874.JPG The 400w MH Lamp dimmed-down to 300. As you can see, it's pretty close to the canopy, but now I don't have to worry about the tops getting scorched :!:

DSCN0873.JPG Sleestack Skunk freebie on the outskirts of the garden. It looks like this is probably a female, but I'm still waiting for pistils to show.

Look at a cool tube for a future purchase.

Put your hand under the light until it gets hot, then lower your hand until the light feels only warm. That is how far away the lamp should be.

I've read that when a light is dimmed that the color spectrum changes. Of course I don't know for sure but I have noticed that when I have dimmed one that the color defiantly looks different but I have no way to check it...

I would crank that light to max. Get that extra 100watts and move the lamp a little higher. You said your flowering now and your using an MH bulb? You can use it to flower but look into an HPS bulb for flower and an MH bulb for veg perhaps next time. You can get a HPS bulb that will work in your MH ballast so you don't have to buy another ballast
Good Luck my friend

Thanks for the replies everyone, I think that I will keep the lamp close to the canopy @ 75% power because raising it will diminish the lumens available to the plants (even if I run it on full power). Distance = crucial and rt. now the lamp is about 8" from the canopy and the heat output is manageable. This is our 1-st 400-watter so we're still learning. Peace, and happy growing everyone!

This always gets me, why ask if you're gonna do what you want anyway? I'm not trying to be an ass this just happens way too much with what we do.

Gary, I wanted some experienced opinions, as they are a valuable learning tool, imo. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but my reasoning is this : Why raise the lamp and adjust to full power, when I can keep it closer and simply use the dimmer switch? I know for a fact that the closer the better and if I run it @ full power AND raise it, it would be approximately the same as keeping it close and dimming it to 300w. I posted this question because I wanted your opinions, but I do try to exercise my own common sense before I make the necessary adjustments. I can't get a fan rt. now (for reasons I don't want to get into) so my only options are: raise the lamp (full power) or keep it close (75% power). I think they are doing okay running on "only" 300 watts. This is what we do here man, we ask questions, and sometimes we still end up "doing what we want anyway" because we all have something called free will. This joint 's for you man :joint:

Interesting, Polo - I haven't heard that before but it could be possible. When I dim my MH lamp the color seems the same- just not as bright. I don't really see how the SPECTRUM would change, simply by dimming the lamp by 25%. Anyone?

Well said brother, I do wanna say your plants look nice and healthy. I don't actually see any scorching but I wonder if 25% reduction in watts is the same as raising the light a few inches on full 400 watt? Maybe I'm wrong but a few inches won't reduce your lumens as much as -100 watts would?

Your Avatar = Tom Forcade, no?
Correct, Google Tom Forcade

Thanks bro, yeah I remember Tom Forcade from my High Times Mag reading days. He was the founder, if I'm not mistaken. Damn I'm old :bigjoint:
PS- I turned on full power and haven't raised the lamp. I did some selective training in the middle of the canopy (highest heat radiation) and am watching them closely. So far, so good. Will update when they fatten up a little :peace:

DSCN0877.JPG Well damn... it finally happened. The very tops of 2 of my colas got scorched by the light. The damage appears minimal, but I've never had this happen before. Do you guys think they will recover? Like aforementioned, the damage is Minimal, and just on the top of the young buds. I dimmed the Lamp back down to 300 -watts and they are doing fine now. I was just wondering if this could possibly retard bud growth for a while... what do you all think?
