its the millions of clones that are the damn problem lol i can always recognize the girls when their older but when your moving around the babies they can be confusing.
Then use zip ties, they come in many colors, simply make a chart to define the colors and then zip one on the base of the stalk loosely or stick it in the medium. I do this when I'm pollinating different branches with different strains

You can take a red solo cup and cut it into strips. Write the strain name or cross on the white side and stick it in the pot as a label.
Or - although not necessarily cheap it's convenient - get a white permanent marker from a car shop, meant to repaint the letters on tires, and use those to number and label the pots on the side.

I think that reusing and re-amending soil should be stressed as a money saver.

That's the very basis of why I am using soil; the sustainability was very attractive to me.

We can get crazy if ya want LOL

I use $5 aquarium drops for PH had the same bottle for 5 years now

I use kitty litter to amend my peat, 25 lbs for $3 at wally world. Unscented clay litter is calcined clay, same thing hydrotron balls are made of, It slow releases sulfur the same way Dolomite slow releases Cal?Mag I mix it 50/50 with peat

I use Jack's nutes a 25 lb bag (more than 5 year supply) is $28

$5 root powder from Home Depot for clones

My drain to waste tubs were a water tank from a pickup camper got at a junk yard for $10 and simply cut it in half

When ya spend as much as I do on lights (my deep blue bulbs are $32 each and I have 7 of em ) ya gotta cut corners somewhere LOL

I was thinking about trying a DIY rapid rooter for cloning. I was thinking of using either panty hose or cheese clothe, adding some soil and tieing it off. Wondering if it would work?

* unfortunately I sometimes have to do DIY projects - not that i am a cheap bastard, i just live almost 100 miles from the closest hydro shop. I order quite a bit online, but some things arnt worth the high shipping prices.

I did make a DIY aero cloner. I took a swimming "noodle" and cut it into 2 inch slices and used that as my plugs for my clones. Worked great! Price for my cloner including fish tank bubbler and a 5 gallon fish tank heater was still under $20!

Yes, Dolomite in the "chunk" form is slow release. Powder it for a faster release if need be.
In a pinch, Tums, powdered will work for a quick Ca blast.

I've eluded to this before,,maybe I did give some details,,,,,but here you go.

How would you like to reduce your synthetic nutrient use by 50%?

There is a product called SEA GREEN. This stuff is worth it's weight in gold...
I use it to replace B vits and Humic/Fulvic supplementation.

It's a Kelp based product that is concentrated (very).
They say to use 1-2ml per gallon of feed.....I found to use 1ml per feed.
You will quickly find that it will cause you to 1/2 your feedings or you'll burn.
I used a daily feed nutrient and had to skip to every other or even less. I now run synth grows at feed, water, water feed....The base nutrient is Hesi.

Now that can save $.

I must say,,,you will have to experiment to find what works for you.....This stuff increases nutrient up-take big time!!

So i know that everyone out there is tired of spending money on everything under the sun that our "needy girlfriends" desire. This thread is to help everyone out that wants to save a buck here and there because lets face it, this isn't cheap. So if anybody out there has any tips on where to buy items for less, substitutions for expensive items or even cheap ones, or anything at all that can save a buck, please post away.

Im a fan of doing things right the first time so you don't have to do it twice which usually means spending the extra money on things that have a warranty, or will last but theres other stuff that can have corners cut to save a buck. I started thinking about posting this thread because of the high prices of those plastic plant markers. Damn things cost a fortune! for what! its a piece of plastic, wtf? The other thing I've considered is using epsom salts instead of calmag from the store. Well post away ya bunch a cheepos. Thanks.
Check out my thread for a million and one cost saving tips, tricks, techs and tactics.

I've done everything from switching to dry chemical nutrient salts like calcium nitrate (the ONLY way calcium gets into solution, cal mag be damned), magnesium sulfate, aka epsom salts to reusing my hydroton substrate every time, all the time to compressorless water chillers to vertical grows with no hoods and on and on and on and on....

anybody know a cheap substitute for plant markers hopefully in plastic?
I use golf tees, super cheap, I write the initials of the strain on top, date on the side with a fine tip sharpie. If you just want to write the initials, then they can be reused

fanfuckingtastic idea! I'm going to get some right away! its like a buck for 20 at the proshop (aka hydroshop) so by the bucket load they'll probably be a penny a piece and it'll remind me of all the things i used to have time to do before i decided to take up this round the clock hobby lol. thanks.

i looked at the thread and its really cool. lots of interesting techniques and nice plants but not a lot of specific cheapo deals, scavenges, or substitutions. its more of a whole growing method and i don't really want to change my methods, just how much money i spend growing in my style cause i already spent the money setting it up and the time building it. now id like to drop the cost of maintaining it so i can get more of the investment back faster. threads doing really well so far though. I've already saved a couple hundred bucks in the last couple pages. thanks again to all the posters. with prices dropping in a lot of the states we need to cut our costs to stay competitive.
