Reputable attorneys in the springs/pueblo area? Or do I need one?

About two weeks ago I accidently turned into fort Carson and told them i meant to go the other way to find a bathroom & asked if I could just turn around. He said sure then asked me if I had any pot on me. I told him I'm a medical patient and do have some of my medicine on me. (I now know this was a mistake - didn't think it through at the time) He asked me to step out of the car. They made it seem like a huge ordeal and I had to wait for 2 hours for their "superior" to get there. Once he did, their "superior" made it seem like not a big deal at all and a waist of his time.

He said the worst case scenario is a $60 fine and since I am a MMJ patient an attorney could probably get the charge dropped.

I am not sure if I need an attorney for this or not.
My main concerns:
•I want to eventually open up a dispensary (not in this state) and don't want something on my record that could screw that up.

•I am assuming this wouldn't happen, but also don't want them trying to charge me with a dui (I had an edible half eaten in my center console + flowers there to which they confiscated) I am assuming if they wanted to charge me with a dui they would of done roadside testing/asked to draw blood on site?

On the ticket he wrote me it says possession or marihuana(he spelled it wrong) on federal property.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

You DO want an attorney.

You DON'T want a conviction.

Better to pay the attorney imo than end up on probation or worse. Note that probation means no mmj, red card or not. You also get the privilege of paying for all too frequent piss tests.

Know afflicted persons and it sucks.

You definitely need an attorney on this. Being caught on federal land with marijuana is still a federal offense, which brings with it lots of headaches. Federal judges' hands are largely tied on this sort of thing, too, given things like mandatory minimum sentences. Your best bet is to get the prosecutor to not prosecute, which usually involves getting a lawyer with access to the prosecutor.

Unfortunately, I don't have any recommendations on a person. Just make sure that whoever you plan to hire is accepted to practice in the Colorado Federal District Court (it's basically a matter of paying an additional fee, no additional testing or anything, but not every lawyer in Colorado is admitted to practice in the Federal court).

I spoke with recommended Attorney today. Sounds like he is the best in the area, but expensive. He said $2,200 for pretrial + $3,000 for trial if it comes to that. He also said a lady (Not sure if she is apart of his firm or not, I believe so though) use to be a judge for a military base/court (If I understood him correctly) so she knows all of the legal ins & outs & would probably be even better than him for it although he said he hates to let business go, but would refer me to her if I wanted.

I talked to someone at a local dispensary who said a lady came in asking the same thing a couple weeks ago with the same situation.

He said Clifton Black (The attorney I spoke with) is the best in Co. Springs for mmj & helped them set up their dispensary, but he said he is expensive. He gave me a business card for "LegalShield"
He said this is who the lady used and they got all of her charges dropped. He said they charge $25/month and require you pay for 6 months minimum so $150 if that is all the cost. I'm going to read their website now then call them tomorrow.

The attorney I spoke with today also said a lot of charges just depend on the judge. Said I could even potentially face jail time, but he said that won't happen, is just something to be aware of. I have no priors so I think that really wont happen.

What do you think?

Right on, man. Does your summons have you returning to the military base or to the federal district court in the Springs or Denver? You will want an attorney who knows whatever system you're in. If it's a military court, that's one story; if it's the regular federal court, that's another. But, your attorney should be familiar with the particular system so he or she will already have a working relationship with the prosecutor and court procedures. Sometimes, particularly with criminal matters, the devil is in the details of the rules, which an experienced practitioner will know. But, just because an attorney has appeared before every single county judge doesn't mean he or she knows the federal courts at all, and vice versa.

As for the rates you stated, that doesn't sound too far off. Things can get expensive very quickly, particularly if you go to trial. I would be careful with the LegalShield folks, too. I've heard of a few seemingly similar operations where you pay a monthly subscription fee like that and all they end up doing is referring you to an attorney, who then charges his or her own fee, or just doing the most basic of work for the subscription fee, and billing all other services (the real services you need, not just filling out a form or entering a plea, while charging like $200/hr) at his or her normal rate. So, just be careful you're not paying them for something you can do on your own, like finding your own lawyer. Not saying that's necessarily these guys, but just be aware.

Would you regret NOT going with the a-team when stuck on probation, pissing in a cup and paying for the privilege? A red card means nothing on probation you can't grow, posess or use. Jail time hanging over head and a drug conviction that would prevent one from ever working in legal Mmj.

Thanks man! I appreciate the pointers. I'm just gonna go with the recommended attorney as opposed to legal shield, I was just curious about it.

Man snaps you are really trying to get my anxiety going, huh?? Lol jk. I appreciate you telling it how it is and helping out so much. I plan to go with cliff. He said potential outcomes won't effect opening up a dispensary (depending on the state, but with the way it is here anyways) and may effect federal funding for school. That's it tho and I'm not worried about that.
Said I may end up on unsupervised probation, but he can probably get all charges dropped since I'm a patient and have legitment serious use for it. He also said I'm clean cut & don't look like a stoner which should help me out, but depends on the judge.
