How do I get those pretty buds?

Hi. I'm a real small time grower with a 400 watt light in a closet with maybe 10 square feet at most to grow in. I can grow bud that is fine to smoke but it looks like garbage. The buds are airy as hell and ragged around the edges, plus the hairs look kind of icky. I'm just wondering if it is even possible to get nice tight, dense buds with only a 400 watt light. Eventually, I'd like to start providing flowers to a dispensary, but now I'd be embarrassed to show anyone my results. Do I need a bigger light or do I need to learn to manicure and cure the buds better? My curing method is basically to let the flowers air dry for about two days after harvest, then put them in air tight containers to cure for about a week. During the week, I open the containers several times a day to let out damp air.

THESE WERE ALL GROWN TOGETHER UNDER ONE 400 WATT HPS
You may need some better genetics...

Learn what makes a plant tick...........learn how and when to harvest and how to dry and cure your harvest properly.

2 days is not long enough to air dry, so you're putting your buds in jars too soon and that will make them compress a lil on their own weight. I let em dry slowly for 7-10 days and then into jars for a cure. And 400w light should be more than enough to get nice looking fat buds broski

Please post a pic of your finished buds, I'd love to see em

Let your plants dry for more than two days before placing them in a jar. from now on don't think about putting the lids on the jar until it's nearly crunchy, you're prolly gettin ethylene build up screwin yer cure.

Are u starting with a proven indica cut or what the heck are you growing? smurf weed need not be dense, but how it burns and the taste is key.

WWhat's the distance between your light and the plant canopy ? Are you using MH or HPS to flower with ?
I allowed about a foot of distance with my latest crop after I realized that I had been "bleaching" the tops of earlier crops by putting the light too close to the plants. By the time the earlier crops were finished, the tops were very bleached out, or at least that's my theory. I guess it's also possible they were starving for nitrogen, but I lean toward bleaching because the tops also looked like they had been burned a little by the lights.

[Q\UOTE="typoerror, post: 11224077, member: 382883"]what are the temps like in your closet? sounds like it may be heat related.[/QUOTE]

I have remote sensor in the closet and the temperature has never gone much higher than 80 or 90 F. However the "weather station" records maximum and minimum temps and it says the max was as high as 140! I'm not sure if I believe that, however. Recently I had to got out of town and leave the plants alone for about three days, so maybe while they were shut up in the closet it got that hot?

OK, I'll try to get a photo of my sorry-ass buds up here. But when you say to air dry for at least a week, does that mean you just leave them out on a screen or hanging somewhere? My buds are pretty brittle after only a couple of days. If I leave them out a week, will there be enough water left in them to cure inside a jar?

This time I grew six strains that I'd never tried before. I got decent results from Ken's GDP. The Master Kush was terrible, barely got a quarter oz. off one plant but I blame myself for that, not the genetics. The plant was all lanky and taller than the others and I cut it way back right before I set the timer for flowering. I also grew something called A+ Pine, which gave me better yield than the others but the buds look pretty sad. Then also something called Jabba's Alien, which must be Jabba's Stash X Alien I guess. Again, the buds look awful and I didn't get as much as I expected, but it smoke pretty good and packs a decent buzz. And the last two plants are Cannatonic and Harlequin. The Cannatonic is the biggest plant in the bunch. Haven't cut it down yet but the buds look like they are a decent size. The Harlequin started out looking promising but the buds on it now are pretty small. I got all the clones from dispensaries in Santa Cruz.

Next crop, I think I will start out with Pakistani and Afghan seeds, then take out the males and replace them with clones from dispensaries.
