http://www.cnet.com/news/new-illinois-law-allows-schools-to-demand-students-facebook-passwords/

...this week Illinois parents began receiving a letter from school authorities informing them that their children's social media passwords may now have to be handed over, as part of school discipline. Motherboard reports that it obtained one of these letters. It reads, in part:School authorities may require a student or his or her parent/guardian to provide a password or other related account information in order to gain access to his/her account or profile on a social networking website if school authorities have reasonable cause to believe that a student's account on a social networking site contains evidence that a student has violated a school disciplinary rule or procedure.

You might imagine that this stipulation only applies to school computers and activity on school premises. It does not. The schools may ask for passwords and search on the basis of any posting by a student at any time and in any place.

If you haven't figured out that Facebook is used by employers to fire people, then you haven't been paying attention. Facebook makes Identity theft just that much easier. Someone can read your page and figure out your spending habits, then steal your CC and go to town making purchases that would not set off any alarms.

One might see this end up in the state supreme court. I think that they will side with the new law if at all constitutionally possible.

If you don't like it, get private schooling they will say.

Just like people on public aid being tested for drug use when giving birth. You take public services, you agree To their terms. :(

Taxpayers pay thru the nose for welfare moms too. They and their babies get tested at birth since the gubmint is paying their medical care with our taxes. Same thing. You want out of the crappy public school system, see how much MORE it costs to go private.

Cops already threatened daughter.
They got her friend to give up his Facebook credentials just by telling him they would get a search warrant if he didn't.

The school liason police officer is doing this.
The kids don't know they don't have to talk to the cops

Just saying, take the governments handouts and live by their rules.

Frankly, worlds smallest violin. Dont care. If parents actually parented, this would've never been an issue. ;)

Reasonable cause can be false. There is more privacy on the page than what they seek. Passwords can be taken home or even sold. Over what major rule would this be required to happen ?

I don`t see this law happening.

As the gubmint says, if you've nothing to hide..... seriously, privacy is moot as soon as you go online.

Any asshole can make up a law. Let's see how well it does in a civil rights lawsuit. I'm betting not so well...

Not so much more as you might think, now that republicans have passed school vouchers, which effectively subsidize private schools on the taxpayer's dime.
