No list is perfect. Here is my contribution. Not necessarily based on my music preferences; but on talent and contribution to music... IMO.

1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Jimmy Page
3) Eric Clapton
4) Joe Bonamassa
5) Jeff Beck
6) David Gilmour
7) Mark Knopfler
8) Richie Blackmore
9) George Harrison
10 Chet Atkins
BTW... I'm a pretty descent guitar player. And I can't play when I'm high. I get slow and stupid.

Bummer! I have no trouble when I'm high. I guess I just have shit on auto pilot/muscle memory. Singing while playing, on the other hand, is nearly impossible for me sober or not.

OH MAN I totally spaced on David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. Not a huge Mark Knopfler fan, but he is technically very talented . and DG?? GTFO! He's a master.

les Claypool, Geddy Lee, cliff burton, John Paul Jones, mike Gordon.

oh and for guitar I thought of another one. Vernon Reid from Living Colour.

flea is self taught. Can't read music. But wouldn't be in my top though

Claypool, Lee and Flea dominate the list.

Amen on Burton! Anesthesia still makes me nut myself. Dude was a master of the frets, and damn damn DAMN good at arrangements. Like Hendrix, he had unlimited potential when he died. I mark the downhill slide of Metallica with his death.

I'd add Stanley Clarke to my list.

Right!!! Gilmour and Knopfler, both awesome guitarists. Mark Knopfler may (and that's a big may) be the best guitarists ever... especially for technique.

Carl Thompson was a pretty good guitarist and bass player. He made Les Claypool's basses too

Mike Gordon is an interesting call. Claypool of course. What about Victor Wooten?
