Yeah but Dire Straits is boring for me to listen to LOL. Does this list have to include charisma as well as technique? Or are we talking strictly guitarists who changed the way the instrument/music is played?

maybe not the best,,,,cuz I love morello,,page,,,hendrix,,,but has his own albums and has done a lot a shit,,,and is like only now 19 or so,,,,that harrison tune was on a toy guitar

Anybody who's seen the movie Road House should recognize him. He played like that because as a child that's just how he started and simply got used to doing it like that.

He's always had my respect! I just realized that he died in 2008.

I think you illustrated a good point & a question i allmost posed to the group before posting my list .

Ive been playing guitar like a hack for 50 yrs now & ive discovered there are 2 different types of players who's styles are wildly different who could be considered a top 10 player .

Youve got players who's techinal skills are worse than mine yet the runs they chose have the ability to envoke emotion & feeling .

Billy Gibbons back with songs like Blue Jean Blues & Jesus just left Chicago his blues runs are ultra simplistic yet envoke emotion .

The great BB King was another emotional player i could listen to & reflect on my life .

Rarely do players with serious technical skill envoke listeners emotions , John Mcglaughlin is a good example , the dude played highly skilled runs but his phrasing was allways machine gun guitar .

The only seriously technical player i ever saw live that could envoke emotion with complicated runs was Frank Zappa with his obscure 10 to 20 minute long runs , with any other player after a few minutes it gets to be redundant flailing , with Frank his phrasing was obscenely genious & would keep you interested at 14 minutes into a 19 minute run .

Then to watch FZ's picking style closely most guitar players would recognize his iron fingers , i dont think ive ever seen FZ play complicated repetitous runs & ever use economy picking , gain speed with each run & never loose his timing , even Steve Via uses economy picking & ive seen him do it on many songs but ive yet to see FZ economy pick .

There are different top 10 lists depending on what effect were expecting from the player .

I like Yngwie Malmsteen 's rising force album.
Black star and far beyond the sun especially but that whole album is pretty killer.
If I want to hear some insane guitar I like Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola too.

I agree technical skill does not really necessarily make a better guitarist.
Tom Morello takes easy stuff and does it well. Very original and expressive . A lot of simpler guitarist have way more fans . Some just because of the band they are in and their songs.

Does Belew get extra points for being an awesome guy? If so, you can take them from Fripp for being a bit of an ass-burger.
