Hypocrisy Thy Name Is Union - Unions Demand Exemption From LA's $15 Minimum Wage

This hypocrisy was discussed on FOX News 'The Five' yesterday.

The argument is, from the union side, as follows:

Rusty Hicks, who heads the county Federation of Labor and helps lead the Raise the Wage coalition, said Tuesday night that companies with workers represented by unions should have leeway to negotiate a wage below that mandated by the law.

“With a collective bargaining agreement, a business owner and the employees negotiate an agreement that works for them both. The agreement allows each party to prioritize what is important to them,” Hicks said in a statement. “This provision gives the parties the option, the freedom, to negotiate that agreement. And that is a good thing.”

that makes no sense..and is..wait for it..against the LAW..would never happen..not even with a union..paying less than minimum is a federal offense..unless of course, it has to do with bible thumping and then you can get the supremes involved so mr. fire and brimstone c-corp can save a few pennies on birth control co-pay..the unborn or 'rise in your pants' have more rights than living human beings, in that case.

additionally union dues are proportional to wage and exemption would only mean less dues for the arbitrators.

The law? You need to start watching The Five and get a touch of reality, the facts. It's no different that Congress being exempt from Obamacare. They saw for what it is, after it was passed of course under a cloak of obscurity, and don't want any part of it.

"The unions are now insisting that that $15 an hour should not actually be the minimum wage in workplaces where unions are involved. Unionised shops should be allowed to set the wage lower than $15 if that’s what they want to do. This could be described as chutzpah, as I have above. It could also be described as repulsively naked arrogance, your choice there."

The union is arguing against the minimum wage. It just isn't fair. :D

EDIT: even sadder, is that you'll walk away from this conversation still quoting 'the five' as fact

It actually says those who work for congress and staffers are mentioned specifically.

I need moar than that to draw any conclusions.

i don't even have to look because i know US health and benefit law (hint: i did this for a living).

employers must provide health for full-time individuals; the government is no exception, they are an employer..the only way to not have ACA would be if your spouse's company provided your coverage.

again, this is US law.

google is available 24/7 worldwide.

So you can't back up your claim with anything substantive despite having "worked at it"?

Your assertion is refuted from lack of evidence, good day.

@Harrekin , you are better than this. Why should @schuylaar spoon feed you information only to have you spew back an ignorant one or two lines? I know that you live in Ireland but the internet works there too. Are your fingers inoperative? If so, you could use one of those pointers that you hold in your mouth. And a good day to you too sir.

Yes! Strengthen unions, extend membership to the majority of workers in industries and service sectors in this nation and let them set minimum wages through collective bargaining by industry. This would be a much more rational approach than having it set through broad sweeping legislation. Six of the most prosperous countries in Europe or the world for that matter use this system to great effect.

Sorry, I didn't mean to butt in. @Harrekin was using an irritating ploy to wear down his opponent in a debate and I responded perhaps too quickly.

The six countries without a statutory minimum wage are Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Cyprus, Italy and one other, I forget which one. They all use collective bargaining agreements to set minimum wages in most industries. In sectors where there are no unions, the government sets minimum wages.

I didnt read past this post so forgive me if im wrong & you covered the areas of health & welfare , pension & vacation pay .

I happen to know a lil sumpin bout dis :)

Anyhow union workers pay packages often are higher than the $15 an hour wage increase , their check might show $12 an hour but add in $6 an hour vacation pay & your allready up to $18 an hour without even adressing the costs associated with pension payments as well as company/union sponsored health insurance .

The exemption will never happen but i dont think you've painted a fair picture as to why the unions want exemption from the law .
