You just cant be American. If you were you would know that this is just not true, you should do some reading...

What other historical meaning do you think the confederate flag could possibly have, other than to display your stance on the right to claim ownership of human beings?
.
I forget where this quote comes from but I think it fits.
"Just because 1 million people eat McDonalds, doesnt make it right."

I really dont care how many people want to keep it up for whatever reasons, what's right is right.
Google what the confederate flag stands for and read the first 15-30 results.(btw i did this when the confederate flag came up in an outside convo yesterday because I was curious as to the reasons it isn't racist vs the fact that it is associated with it) What you get are people who have your opinion, and people that think there's meaning as history behind it more than racism. I am American in the sense that I like freedom, I enjoy the fact that people here are free I say and think aloud whatever they want. I think what's unamerican(or at this point very American) is to push your opinions on others because you have decided yours is the right one and other people can't think what they do because it doesn't fly with your values. I guess at this point a lo I the world hate us because that's exactly what we do even though we say we stand for freedom.

People are racist, an they can use whatever symbols they want to be hateful. That doesn't make the symbol itself racist, it's an inanimate object... Does that mean we should take away peoples right to freedom of expression because another group of people think that it's not right? Which amendment is freedom of speech? Pretty sure it's like #1. What you are saying limits this right, that is what is truly not American IMO.

Hate symbols have no place above a state capitol. Especially hate America symbols.
I can tell you just dont understand, read up on the civil war.

Why do you think there is such a controversy every few years to take down that same flag?
Because it should not be up there.

When did I push my views on anyone? I thought this was the place to share opinions on the issue.
I am just very solid in my position.
The ironic thing is my ancestors fought to keep that flag up too. They werent given an option, you know that whole humans as property thing..

How about you Google the guy who designed it. In no uncertain terms he said the flag represented white supremacy and the inferiority of the black man.

Ask your self why it was put back up in 1962 after not being displayed for almost 100 years. Civil rights.

And the swastika was designed as a peace symbol, do you think that it's design has anything to do with what hitler made it? Symbols are used fairly regularly for their unintended purposes.

About 50% if people agree with you. The other half don't, that's why we're here having this discussion lol. At the point that you stated that it's racist an should be taken down, you implied that your 50% of the opinion is the right one. And that is exactly what we're debating about, people that thought they knew/were better than other people.

I haven even given my opinion of whether not I think the con flag is racist or not, only that America is about freedom of expression and about half of people want to take freedoms away from people they don't agree with because they don't agree with them and are convinced that their side is the right one. There are two sides and in this issue it's about 50/50, and whether I like it or not I think telling people why they can and can't express is not American.

Quote me please, I just read through the whole thing and I am pretty sure I never said the things you are claiming I did.

While you're at it define freedom.

In America when you are on government property, or property of the government, there are way less rights.

Try exercising your right to bear arms on government property....
Try exercising your right to free speech in a courtroom...

But....but...freedom.

For the record the ratio is not 50/50, it's not even close bruh.

So you think is appropriate to fly the swastika And not have people think you are a nazi?

The stainless banner on question was designed as a symbol of hate, and used as a symbol of hate.

And your trying to conVince me of what?
It's a flag of tolerance, equality and love?

I agree that the flag doesn't solely represent slavery. It also represents:

-being a traitor towards your own country
-causing the death of around three quarters of a million people
-losing a war
-kkk
-segregation
-jim crow

Along with slavery, these are all great sources of pride to some for some reason.

It seems like there is this myth being perpetuated that the confedo flag has a cultural significance that is not attached at the hip to slavery. Like what?

I am waiting to hear something more significant than "But...but my Duke of Hazard toys"

I was just in Asia and in the parts of the world where the swastika comes from, it is absolutely acceptable to have it displaced as a peace symbol, not as the hate reinterpretation.

The thing should be treated as the POW flag from Nalm is. It has a meaning with many and has no value to many more. Give the SCOTUS a little time and Old Glory may have new meanings........right up there with subsidies and marriage.,....

It should be offensive to any american, because it represents the oppression of a specific group of people, based on the color of their skin. It should be down right unacceptable to the folks it's pointed at.

All Americans should be ashamed to display that flag.
I completely understand it's historical importance, it just so happens to be one of the links in the chain that I must go through to find out who I am.
This post states that
"It should be offensive to anyone"
"It should be unacceptable"
"All Americans should be ashamed"

I think fat people shouldn't wear skin tight clothes and it's offensive and they should be ashamed ofthemselves, but it's their right to pick what they want to wear, even if it offends me. I understand that right and think it applies to anything that doesn't directly hurt somebody else.(feelings don't count, real damage to someone else)

It's pretty simple really....who cares what the confederate flag originally stood for. Today, it is a symbol of white supremacy. The fact is, the last thing thousands of black people saw before they were beaten to death or hung is the confederate flag. The last word thousands of black people heard before they were beaten to death or hung was "N#%**r". That's why it has to go.
