Following the Curing Rules, But My Weed Sucks!

No, just a source of "harshness/bad taste".
I generally try to keep my grows as organic as possible. That's why I'm so surprised it's as harsh as it is.

What about flushing? I was under the impression you really only do this when using nutrients. Since I didn't use any, I didn't see the need to do any flushing prior to harvest. Thoughts?

I never have time to flush....and I'm in hydro.
I would test for mold or mildew. $75 will let you know if you should change something in your grow or curing.

It could be something as simple as dirty jars.

Whoa...boil? First time hearing of this.
there are several threads on it here, perhaps you should read some of my old threads

https://www.rollitup.org/t/calling-all-noob-growers.316301/

https://www.rollitup.org/t/the-truth-about-flushing.409622/

read the whole thread, I like to bury things :)

When they are done I water em with boiling water and leave em under the lights for 3 to 5 days (varies with diff strains) then chop and dry, it speeds up the curing process

you are correct, you shouldn't/can't flush an organic soil. if you are using an organic soil, know that boiling the roots will kill all the good in your soil. if you plan on re using it, don't boil the roots at the end.

"The longer I let them cure, the mellower the smoke usually."

This is what I've read and heard too, but it's not my experience. I smoked some last night that has been curing at 60% for almost 4 months, and I haven't coughed that hard in years.
You didn't let them dry out enough you trapped chlorophyll and moisture in the buds when you threw them in the jar wet.

@RM3 and @chuck

Sounds great. I will definitely read up on this technique since I don't plan on reusing soil. I may also switch to inorganic grows and use peat and nutrients if I can't get the issue resolved.

What happened here is most likely due to your humidity in the drying area being too low.

Anything below 40% humidity in the drying area will cause harshness. This is because the outside of the bud drys faster than the inside.

The outside of the bud actually dies. It stops metabolic functions and stops breaking down chlorophyll.

Even, slow drying is what you need.

40-60% humidity

65-75*F

Anything outside that will reduce flavor, smell, and cause a harsh smoke.

Try to dry at 55 percent rh and 68 f and it should take at least 7 day. If it is drying in 2 days you need to slow that down. The slower the betterfor a smooth smoke

I just finished a cure in co also. Came out great, loud smell, louder then when they were growing by far.

The slow hang dry works amazing.
I gave the plants 36hrs darkness, mostly out cuz of laziness. The soil was pretty damn dried out after 4 days no water. They were chopped and hung almost whole in an 8x10 room. I set my dehumidifier for 70 and my humidifier at 50%. About 73 degrees. Then they were left alone, not bothered once, for 10 or so days, in pitch black. Them I trimmed and they are in jars now. Humidity of the finished product is about 60 right now. Smoke is smooth and tasty. Ddont stress, just do the best set up u can for hanging and leave them. My humidifier is small and cheap too. Good luck.

I went round and round with this a bit at first.
If you put them in a jar too wet you will end up with harsh bobby brown
I have a mega humidity problem where I am (right by ocean) so my approach is to use a dehumidifier in a closet with my branches hung on coat hangers.
What I do is when I take down the plants give them kind of a pre-trim, remove anything that doesn't have frost on it.
Then dry for approx. 4 days at 55% (debatably too low?), then put the final trim on things.
I usually leave the nugs in these big ass net pots that I have overnight in the same drying closet just to kinda let things even out moisture wise where they were cut from the stems.
I can tell you at that point the smoke is at the level that the club wants it the next day :bigjoint:
You could jar and cure from there if that is what you are after.
I will say the harshest herb I have come across was some Platinum Cookies that was "Organic"
I grow in Hydro with commercial mineral salt nutrients and everyone compliments on how smooth my product is.
Maybe try another strain?

It seems to be the consensus that I just didn't hang dry long enough. Going to give this next harvest a good week before going into jars. Thanks for the replies everyone. I appreciate the time you all took to respond.

Your humidity is too low to hang that long. You need to get your humidity above 40%.

Hey Flaming, I agree with what you said. Hanging for 1 week at 15% humidity would turn the weed to corn flakes. Went out and bought a humidifier today...figured it would be useful. Thanks.
